• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

<drivel-snip>Was this thread locked? No. Was it supposed to be locked, at my request? Yes!

Look everyone, it's Lindsay's boss!

Dude, you need to get over it, OK? You'll never convince people like me, who have been in this hobby for more than 5 minutes, that scanning is dead. There will always be something to monitor: Planes, trains, security guards, taxi cabs, boats, mil-air, school busses, drive thru's, ham radio, news media - these are just a few of the many, many aspects of scanning that you obviously never thought about. Trust me - if all public safety encrypted tomorrow I'd still have plenty of fun listening in on everything else. Scanning will not die, it will simply adapt and evolve, just like it always has before.

Well, I did not here you say, that you heard SYSTEM USERS complaining, jut that YOU could not hear.

As many have said before; there is a BIG difference between the performance of a radio designed for the system, and a scanner.

Right now, on this system at least, the biggest difference is the $2500 difference in price. Other than that the performance of the system users' AS3 and my PRO-96 is about the same. :( Oh, and they can transmit (sometimes).

What is being overlooked here is that, just because a system may have a channel or two encrypted, that does not mean that ALL traffic will be encrypted. Note the letter to the media that someone posted previously. Some channels will undoubtedly be left in the clear, if for no other reason than to keep the flaming liberal gov'mint haters from going nuts. Regardless of whether or not AES or DES can be cracked, there will still be traffic on the air in the clear. As long as there is that, people will scan. This whole debate is kind of pointless.
