Hello Everyone,

I just got a new BCT15 for Christmas and I am trying to pick up the South Brunswick police. I went into the database for Somerset County NJ and South Brunswick was listed as a EDACS Standard. Is my BCT15 capable of monitoring this type of system. I tried to add South Brunsiwck into my scanner and I hear nothing. Can someone tell me if I can get this system and how. I am using ScanCtrl to program my scanner.

Thanks

I think scan control has a feature call data grabber, if you become a premium member here, you can use that feature and the software will program your scanner for you, pick out the county, towns, etc. and it will load them in the scanner. Read the docs that came with scan control for directions on how it works.

The BCT15 is capable of monitoring South Brunswick's system. Make sure you program it as EDACS Wideband (Standard) and not Narrowband. Also make sure you put the five system frequencies in the proper order.

I do not have a BCT15 or ScanCtrl so I can't help you with specifics on them.

This system has not yet rebanded; the data in the database here is still correct.

I have one other question for you robbinsj2. How did you know to select wideband and not narrowband. I just switched it over from Narrowband. Is there somewhere in the database that tells you it's a wideband.

Thanks

James,

EDACS Standard = EDACS Wideband, they're synonymous. I've just been around long enough to pick that up; it is a common mistake. The RadioReference.com Wiki probably goes into it but you would have to dig (and know to dig) for it.

Generally speaking, you can assume that "EDACS" or "EDACS Standard" is wideband. If it is one of the other EDACS varieties (Narrowband, SCAT) then it will usually be specified.

Fineshot: you're right, South Brunswick is still in Middlesex County.

Program in all five. If you miss one then the scanner will miss some comms; if you put them in the wrong order then it will not work at all.

Are you are located in South Brunswick. I'm not picking up anything still. It's weird it seem to pick up something once or twice but no activity all night. I have to be doing something wrong.

These are the system freqs below. Program them into a bank(any bank) in the logical order in which they appear below. If your bank starts with zero skip that one and start your entry in memory slot 1, then 2, then 3, then 4, and last 5. Now just make sure (I think you already did this part) this bank is setup for EDACS Standard and it should work. If it still does not work re-read the directions that came with the scanner to make certain that the bank is setup correctly for EDACS Standard. I do not have a BCT-15 so I do not know the specifics on how to do that.

I am. Are you? I generally get the system very well from within South Brunswick and from municipalities adjacent to South Brunswick. Beyond that it depends a lot upon terrain, local sources of interference, and simple distance. Others have reported difficulty receiving the system even from towns adjacent to SB.

Try programming the five frequencies as conventional, no PL or DPL. Scan them and listen for the control channel. If the scanner does not stop on a channel which has a continuous stream of noise (the trunking instructions from the tower to all the mobile and handheld radios), and receive it fairly clearly, then you will not be able to scan the system. Try moving to a different location or getting a better antenna.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I live in North Brunswick near Regal Movie theather. I kept playing with it last night and I was able to get it working. There was a accident on RT1and Black Horse one fatality.
