Good day to all, just wondering if it were possible for a scanner like myself to pick up incoming satelight stuff Ie: Weather sat photos ect. I was on You tube and watched a guy do it with a 700$ FT-857, I don't have that however I do that an ICOM Pcr100 and a Pro 97.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Type of antenna software needed ect.
Thank you in advance.

I'm with noob. Where is the satellite listening for dummies section?

This hobby is wildly fascinating, but I can't seem to find a wiki or tutorial that can explain/demonstrate it for somebody with a cheap ($200 Radio Shack) scanner and no experience whatsoever.

Is there a good reference that can help set something up for like a 10 year old in a weekend afternoon? (Meaning no assumptions that we know relevant acronyms or complex math). Something like, "Go to the hardware store and buy A. Cut it into pieces B and C of D length. This will be your antenna. Take some wire and wind it E times around part F. Duct tape it together and point it to where software G tells you a satellite will be. Program your scanner to frequency H. Sit back and listen."

This page has alot of good info on Weather Fax Satellites:
http://www.geo-web.org.uk/apt.html
For software take a look at Wxtoimg (there is lots of info about antennas and receivers here):
http://www.wxtoimg.com/

This is probably above a 10 years old's level, but who is to say. It is not too hard to at least hear the beeps and chirps of a satellite as it goes overhead. You might even be able to get some poor quality pictures, but to get good quality pictures you will need to special antenna and a dedicated recevier.

Here is a great page that shows you what can expect:

Good luck, it is a very cool hobby!

Check out ( Hearsat.org ) its an older website but has tutorials on listening too sats. It has been explained that some sats can be heard on a scanner but it is often less than ideal. The have a great list server that I get emails almost everyday from folks listening too sats.
Might be worth checking out...
