• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Reviving a thread. So as of 2024, anyone know what happened to produced SSE5000s that made it out of the factory? I've heard countless stories (mostly not vettable). From secret caches under the city stored away for 'emergencies', to they all went into a wood chipper, to political fights over budget money....

The most plausible story I heard was NYPD bailed on the contact and they never made the streets, or to the city in any numbers, beyond some brass getting demo models to evaluate. The second most plausible was that there is a maintained cache of them somewhere in the city hidden away, but seeing as I no one I know who worked 9/11 ever saw one at that incident makes me think that's likely a BS story. If they were going to be pulled out, what other time than that.

So as of today. I'm curious to entertain *legitimate* stories of historical the life cycle of that model (how many produced, how many made it into hands in NYC, where did they all go.)

Anyone have any factual insight?

If your off your meds and have a wild "Cowthief" conspiracy story of entertainment value... I suppose toss it in as well as long as it's *obvious* it's conspiracy and funny.

Goal of the post is to get to the factual history of the SSE 5000. If all you have is an Alex Jones take on things, take a deep breath and don't hit Post for a few weeks to give a chance for some legitimate people in-the-know to post first.

My command had a cache of SSE5000’s. They were assigned to the auxiliary unit. They were never used on patrol. The auxiliaries carried them. Used to make me laugh we had the POS vertex but the auxiliaries had the SSE’s.

Don't forget they were used for the 2004 RNC. They definitely weren't around for the September 11 attack. There were brief periods of time where they were the THV loaner radios. I also believe Truck 3 & 4 used them for a short period of time. But yes, it seems their final fate was use by the Auxiliaries. Talk about overkill.

It If I remember correctly, all of ESU had them for a while. I only know because for a time during barricade/hostage jobs, the negotiators phone conversation would be rebroadcast on one of the TAC/ point to point channels. This was strictly used with the HNT throw phone. The radio we connected and used was an SSE with encryption enabled. All of ESU had this channel with encryption to monitor what was going on. It was a very short lived experiment.

I held two of these in my hand in the early 2000s at Dayton. Both were owned by (allegedly) FDNY guys. Neither one of them worked. YMMV.

The only reason for the whole SSE project was the job didn’t want to buy all new accessories for a new batch of radios.
Then vertex swooped in with a below market price radio and accessories and the rest is history.

Same thing I heard. Put an MTS2000 in a saber form factor, please.

Not to hijack the thread but if memory serves correct, the Si was only produced in 800mhz? I vaguely recall hearing of someone replacing the board from an MTS with vhf or uhf. Wish I’d gotten one back then just for a fun project.

I saw one many years ago. The guy put a low split UHF board in it.

I think @mikegilbert has one of the Saber SI’s. Most were 800MHZ from what I remember.

Sure do!

Here's a side-by-side with an Astro Saber
