I have been made aware that the output on the BCD 996p2 is a stereo connector. But yet it's monophonic output. I'm confused. Why is it a stereo output? Does this mean that I use a stereo plug and short it at the scanner end when plugging in for example a Motorola speaker?

On Uniden scanners, the headphone jack is a stereo jack with the same audio going to left and right channels so that both sides of headphones or earbuds will have sound. Avoid using a mono plug in the headphone jack as that will short out half of the audio output amp and possibly cause damage to your scanner.

Also, the headphone jack volume level is purposely reduced for ear safety. If you have to connect an external speaker with a mono plug to the earphone jack, use a stereo to mono adapter at the jack, and using an amplified external speaker would give you much better volume output at the speaker.

On Uniden scanners with an ext speaker jack, that output Is a mono jack, and at normal audio volume levels…. A much better choice for an external speaker.

I think we're on a different wavelength. I am referring to the Two Jacks in the back of a 996 p2. One is an 8 ohm out for a speaker and one is a line level out. On the front of the unit is a headphone out which of course that would be stereo. I've been told however that the rear output Jack is also stereo. That doesn't make sense to me. I will be feeding these to the internet.

Since we are talking about headphone out jacks, I have several 1065/197/652/1040/651/500(s) and some 1095/1098/TRX2(s) and can someone tell me for sure if the headphone jack on these scanners is stereo?

But we are NOT talking about the headphone jack. Page 103 of the owner's manual states that the record out uses a stereo jack. I asked why.

If the record out on the rear of the 996P2 is stereo, does that mean that I need a line isolator on each prong of the record line out? I can use a soldering iron so would that mean that I need to cut the end off of a Y stereo RCA cable and put 1/8 in mini male plugs on so that they will plug into the line isolator? This doesn't make sense to me because the line in on my computer is mono.

Unlike the headphone jack that requires a stereo connector, the REC jack on the rear of the scanner can use either a stereo or mono connector/cable into the computer. Just put a line isolator in line with a 1/8" mono cable to your computer.

Bingo! I knew it had to be simple and I just needed someone to make it simple for me. Thank you very much.
