Not a good race yesterday at Dover with early Red Flag wreck and 2 car race the rest of the way. Also flyovers were from West-East,East-West so lousy photo ops for me as well.
TEXAS ANG F-16s were on their usual squad A/A 140.150 and race control 123.025.
They were confused as well so ran a little late inbound.
Just one of those days..

SCARS 54 AK-ANG #82-0054 setting up for Leap Frog drops and TEXAS 91 F-16's.
The new Dover Monster at entrance looked cool though.. Bigger than I thought.

Mark,

Thanks for those nice pics. Especially the Dover entrance. I did a 10-lap drive around Dover last Memorial Day--what a thrill. I have all the respect in the world for those guys whipping around there at 180 mph. I only did about 115 mph with ony three of us on the track and that had me on the edge of my seat. I can't imagine going around there at the speeds they do with all those other guys around.

Now that you've made me envious of your time on the Dover track, how about an explanation of how you happened to do that?

And, Mark, thanks for the pictures. The TV coverage really had me confused. The F-16s weren't shown at all - nor did I hear any jet engine noise when I expected the flyover. I listened to them pre-race but last I heard was about 15 minutes prior to the actual flyover at the end of the National Anthem. I presume that's when they did it. I guess they were too low during the actual flight over the track to be able to hear them but I should have heard them just before and just after - but didn't.

Thanks also for the info on the mysterious C-130 - that is no longer so mysterious.
Had SCARS 54 (C-130H, 82-0054, 144th AS AK-ANG) up at 0950 this morning so guess he was leaving.

Your welcome Ron and Alan..
Even though race was not great it was still fun to take a stroll along
front straightaway as close as they let you just to get a real sense of the speed those
guys do out there...Amazing. Doing a mile in a little over 30 seconds and like Ron says
probably 180 down the straights...always a thrill. You just don't get that shockwave type sensation on TV. :)
Like watching F-16 low flyby on TV or in person. Just aint the same.

Tin,

I won the ride at my local Goodyear store as part of a contest when I bought a set of tires. It was good for a ten-lap ride around the Monster Mile put on by a company caleed Monster Mile. You can buy a three-lap ride around the track with a pro-driver, a five-lap drive your self and a ten-lap drive yourself self. Each packcage has it's own price--mine, the ten-lap one cost about $400 if purchased.

On the drive yourself trips you can choose either a truck or one of the cars. Mine happened to be one of Bobby Allison's former cars #10 Ford Taurus---or so I was told.

The suit you up then take you around the track in a van so you get the "feel" of the track as well as some of the tricks to driving the track. They block off the top two "layers" of the track so you can only use the lower three "layers."

They send you out with a pro driver in the lead and the two drive yourselves. You have to stay behind the lead driver and can't pass anyone. As you get used to the track the pro driver ups the speed until he thinks he's going as fast as we amateurs can handle.

It was a THRILL let me tell you. The day I did my ride it was in teh 90's and I was wringing wet when I climbed out (just about) of the car after the ten laps. I can't imagine doing that for about 4 hours or so. These guys are really in shape. I literally wrestled that car around the track, no power steering there---at least it didn't feel like it. Coming down off the top (for us) layer and diving into the corner turns was heart pounding. Theere were only three of us on any one run, but if gives you a sense of what it would be like to be going at top speed surrounded by lots of other cars. NO THANKS---those drivers deserve all the respect in the world. The amount of physical capability need, along with the intense concentration and mental acuity warranted is really something else.

I'll stick to golf---driving the golf cart is dangerous enough for me :)

Guys,

It's strange that the Navy SEALs DEMO Team used an USAF acft for transport when they have several C-130Ts at VR-53 at Andrews.

But I guess when you need safe, reliable on-time transport you call on the USAF---spoken by an ex-USAF-er :)

I find nothing wrong with that statement -- <said another ex-USAF-er>
I mean, how do you parachute out of a boat anyway?

Thanks for the Dover story Ron. Winning that ride was just fantastic. It's like getting the tires for free - or so I would convince myself. And some people think NASCAR drivers aren't athletes.
