This morning at about 8 AM, I heard an "Army Copter 50077" flight of 4 calling Willow Grove Tower on 119.6. The pilot indicated that he was instructed to contact Willow Grove when he got to the area to find out if he would be stopping there or continuing on to "the port".

After a check by the tower, I heard the helo acknowledge that his group would be continuing on to the port.
I could not hear the tower side of the conversation.

Anybody know what type of helos or where they were from, maybe even where they were going?

Interesting. At approximately the same time, a monitor in Florida was copying the ALLEYCAT transmissions with NORTHERN LIGHTS. NL must have had several transmitters active all the way from your area down to Florida - at least.
*****************************

1407: NATO 45 (CT-49A, LX-N19997, NAEW&CF Geilenkirchen) through the area from the west and then heading to the northeast. At 1449, it crossed over Nantucket so is probably on the way back to Europe.
1522: RHODY 32 (C-130J, 99-1432, 143rd AS RI-ANG) w/Martin State Tower for landing runway 15...121.3
1525: RHODY 32 reports gear down for full stop...121.3
Not sure if it was RHODY 32 talking but I heard the C-130 interplane freq - 299.5 - active while he was on approach to MTN. The only other C-130 I've got in the area right now is an H model from the 130th AS WV-ANG. Just not sure if it was those two talking to each other.
Add: Nope it wasn't...still have two talking on that freq after RHODY landed. Not sure where the WV-ANG C-130 is going yet but he's now also descending.
1540: Still watching the WV C-130...it's tail is 94-6708...still not sure where he's going to land....already too low for McGuire/Dover/Willow Grove/Patuxent...currently holding at 3,000 feet.
1545: The WV-ANG bird is ANVIL 52 and he's also going into Martin State...have him with Tower...121.3
1548: ANVIL 52 reporting, "right base, gear down"...121.3 [Cruddy transmitter compared to the RHODY C-130]
1550: AXEMAN flight of MD-ANG A-10s landing at MTN w/Tower...297.2 (they've been working 142.3 interflight)
1550: ANVIL 52 apparently had a missed approach and is going around again...climbed back to 1600 feet...121.3
1552: ANVIL 52 reports, "gear down...cleared to land"....121.3 [He's going in behind the A-10s]
1554: Have a German Air Force C-160D, 50+74, LTG-61 climbing out - probably from Dulles

Re: ARMY COPTER 50077

Ben,

The only thing I can come up with that is close to 50077 is AH-64D 98-05077 which is based out of Fort Rucker/Hanchey Army Heliport.

Hope this helps!

Tony, thanks.

Without a visual, I guess there's no way to tell for sure.

Interestingly, I just checked one of the local news websites here for the Philly region and saw this story on their page:

http://www.kyw1060.com/Not-a-Bird--Nor-a-Plane---Military-Copters-Take-Fl/2983492

It's in reference to an apparently large number of military helo flights transiting the area recently as the military repositions equipment.
