I've been trying for over a week now to find out how to listen to the Quebec Provincial police SQ (Surete du Quebec) when they go into "Crypto" mode, but could not make anything work...

Question:
1- Is it possible to listen to the SQ when they go into "Crypto" mode?
2- If possible, does anyone know the "Recipe"?

I Presently have 2 RTL-SDR dongles
SDR sharp
DSD+
Unitrunker

But I have yet to make it work...

If this type of device does not do the trick, would a UNIDEN BCD536HP do it?

If they are encrypted, then it is not possible to monitor them by any means without going to them and asking for one of their radios.

If it is impossible to decipher their "Crypto" then, please, tell me why they're switching to their personal cellphones to communicate highly sensitive info instead of just switching to "Crypto"...

We're not talking about time travel here... this is just radio signal encryption...

Anybody else has a technical answer to this simple question

They may go to phones simply to convey the info to the person they wanted to talk to rather than every officer that has the correct encryption key in their radio.

It depends on what their 'crypto' mode is. If it is DES-XL or DES-OFB or AES-256 you are out of luck. Regardless of device. You as a hobbiest, will not be able to listen to encrypted communications. While DES has been proven insecure, it is not practical for a hobbiest to derive the correct key, nor does the equipment you have, posses the correct UCM, or KVL to make use of a recovered key.

If they are using AES-256, you only real options are to join the force as either a civilian employee, or as a sworn officer or get 'a ride' in a car.

AES-256 is virtually impossible(would take more energy that earth has or will ever produce, to brute force an encrypted transmission) that as far as the hobbiest is concerned, is 100% secure.

Remember, the reason these agencies go to secure comms is to keep unauthorized listeners out. By unauthorized that means you, any other scanner user and anyone they don't want listening to their secure communications.

If they are encrypted, then it is not possible to monitor them by any means without going to them and asking for one of their radios.


Close, what you need is the type of encryption, the key, the KID, a key variable loader, and a radio, on the correct band, with a UCM/MACE flashed with the correct algorithm.

No need to be rude. Frankly, you provided so little information, other than 'crypto' (there are likely 5-8 different algorithms they could possibly be using depending on how old their infrastructure is)that I had to go digging to try and find out what encryption this agency uses, and still am only taking a stab in the dark.

His answer, while not technical, was entirely correct.

You on the other hand have asked a commonly asked question:

'How do I listen to encrypted communications?'

Which frankly, has been answered many, many, many, many, many times. There is a wonderful site called Google... Or even the site search here, that could have answered your question.

I appreciate your response and glowing positive review for my answer to your question. If you have a way to breaking encryption, feel free to publish a paper about it. Encryption and security is an extremely popular topic and any insecurities is extremely sought after.

Encryption, by definition, is the encoding of data so that unauthorized users can not easily access it. If you somehow think that it is easy decrypt something, then you are very much mistaken. Feel free to disregard this fact.

Assumptions were made that by asking the agency for a radio, they would have flashed it with the proper keys needed. Some agencies do this for news agencies.

The simple answer was already given:

No, you can't monitor that system if encryption is enabled unless you happen to have one of the radios that's used for that system and it has the necessary settings enabled to provide for decryption as required. While it might be technically possible in some manner to create some haphazard workaround with various types of SDR software and hardware, the encryption itself will stop you cold every time and unless you have access to the necessary system and radio-specific info (as mentioned above) you're just SOL, period, end of story, that's the ballgame folks.

I mean really.

As for using smartphones, well, smartphones using cellular technology is a completely different thing from traditional point to point radio communications, with vastly more coverage capability simply because of how cellular technology works (albeit some radio systems can patch through and allow someone to make or receive an actual "phone call" and that's been a capability for decades now). And go figure: cellular technology uses encrypted communications by default.

Also, smartphones allow for more precise forms of communication overall and not the half-duplex style (one person talks at a time, etc) that traditional radio communications are designed to function with. And sometimes it's just easier to use a smartphone so you're not tying up the actual radio comms with chatter that doesn't necessarily need to go out for every individual on the system to hear.

If you happen to have a Janek's Box type thing, by all means, listen in on anything your ears want but until you do, encryption is quite literally a wall of soundproof material between you and what those ears might wish to hear.

Seeing as the OP has made 2 posts and is obviously new to these surroundings, this should be a good lesson from the gitgo: encrypted comms are essentially not able to be monitored without access to the actual authorized radio hardware in use on the system itself - even if you had the necessary third-party capability to monitor an encrypted system, doing so would be against the law in most every country in the world so here's another lesson of sorts: the encryption debate with respect to radio comms is a very hot and delicate subject here at RR even in casual discussions, so be aware of that.
