I've reading and it gets me more confused. So can I take the Tech then General test the same day? If not how long do you have to wait? I figure I know I want to do HF . So I figure get that license and the equipment to start. I don't want to get a cheap radio then turn around and need to buy another.

Yes.

No waiting. You take the tech test. If you pass, and the VEC has time, you take the general test. If you fail the tech test, maybe the VEC will let you take the tech test again that day. Maybe not.

Excellent. Even if you don't pass the general test right off, you could get on the air on 10 meters and have a blast. You can always upgrade later. But really... avoid getting trapped on 2 meter repeaters until you get some other experience under your belt.

As long as you pass the Tech exam, you can immediately take the General the same day for no additional charge. If you pass the General, you can also take the Extra for no additional charge.

You might want to let the VEC know beforehand if you plan to do this just as a courtesy so that the VEs can plan accordingly.

Yes, usually if you pass the Tech license test the VE's will let you take the General license test right after the Tech.

Almost everything you need to know can be found online, from sample FCC exams to background information about amateur radio. There are literally hundreds of ham forums available online, and you might wish to start by looking at American Radio Relay League | ARRL - The national association for AMATEUR RADIO, The one requirement is patience, because none of us was able learn everything we know today in a short time.

I did all three elements in one evening - but with the guys in Ripon (Yorkshire) in the UK. I told them ahead what I wanted to do. There are no time limits, so if you are proficient in the Tech knowledge, you may well finish before those less confident, and have plenty of time to do the General, without inconveniencing the VEs. Spend some time drilling on Ham Test Online (which you can do for free).

I took both in the same day. Passed my Tech, failed my General. I didn't expect to pass the General though. I'm still getting used to talking on my little ht.

Well after reading these post it seems like most people have more fun on Tech bands. So I just took that to start. I passed it :) so I'm anxious for my ULS listing now.
