Has anyone heard about a shooting at Texas Tech this evening?
Let me guess, the campus security officer wasn't allowed to carry a gun
it was illegal for the student to carry a gun.
The student could quite possibly have been carrying the weapon legally on campus. http://www.ttu.edu/campuscarry/op10.22.pdf
Since this was a welfare check, I'm wondering if the officer made the mistake of assuming the student was not armed (knife, brass knuckles, pointed scissors, firearm, etc.) and did not frisk him for his own safety after discovering contraband in the dorm room. It was reported that the subject may be suicidal and armed with a firearm, so he should have been searched.

The suspect is only 19, so would not have been able to personally carry a firearm. But the officer did not have him in handcuffs, and if the suspect used his own gun (as opposed to gaining control of the officer's handgun), then the suspect was either not frisked, or was not correctly searched.I have no contacts with TT, but I wonder if there is a PC attitude at the school that affected the officer's actions.
