Let me guess, the campus security officer wasn't allowed to carry a gun, and it was illegal for the student to carry a gun. See how gun laws, and PFZ's don't work? Sad. My condolences to the officer's family and friends.

The Texas Tech Police are licensed police officers and therefore able to carry weapons legally. https://www.depts.ttu.edu/ttpd/recruiting.php Their web site states that "The department issues uniforms, duty gear and weapons." http://www.depts.ttu.edu/ttpd/salaries.php

it was illegal for the student to carry a gun.

The student could quite possibly have been carrying the weapon legally on campus. http://www.ttu.edu/campuscarry/op10.22.pdf

Tech Alum checking in...the suspect is supposedly only 19 years old (which would not qualify him for a LTC license). Also, even prior to campus carry being passed through the campus OP was reviewed with students my freshman year in the days following the release of the OHW UT Shooter Blues. Basically, the consensus was no firearms in the dorms or campus buildings (for those who were licensed to carry). The unlicensed were able to leave firearms in their vehicles but other than that possession on campus was prohibited. This remained in place until my graduation in December 2015 (campus carry would go into effect September 2016).

I do have to add, watching the student protest at UT for "Carry Cocks not Glocks" was quite comical...

Since this was a welfare check, I'm wondering if the officer made the mistake of assuming the student was not armed (knife, brass knuckles, pointed scissors, firearm, etc.) and did not frisk him for his own safety after discovering contraband in the dorm room. It was reported that the subject may be suicidal and armed with a firearm, so he should have been searched.

Cop had the guy in custody. Cop was lazy. Cop died because of it. Suspect should admit it, then be shot instantly.

If drugs were decriminalized, the cop would be alive..... Yay for the war on drugs.

I have no contacts with TT, but I wonder if there is a PC attitude at the school that affected the officer's actions.

The suspect is only 19, so would not have been able to personally carry a firearm. But the officer did not have him in handcuffs, and if the suspect used his own gun (as opposed to gaining control of the officer's handgun), then the suspect was either not frisked, or was not correctly searched.
