I am curious what Federal Frequencies / Agencies are active in the Salt Lake Area. Does anyone scan any of theses services? what all is there that we can check for action on?

I monitor the Forest Service and BLM repeaters quite a bit and have submitted the frequencies to RR. Some may be listed under Utah County since they're on Lake Mountain, but they also serve Salt Lake County. There are also National Park Service repeaters, but none near Salt Lake. I've never heard other federal agencies, though.

In other states I've seen frequencies listed for the FBI and Federal Marshals, but I've never heard traffic on those frequencies.

Nextel has become the feds primary means of communication. There is very little radio traffic today, as compared to a few years ago. And of that radio traffic, almost all of it is encrypted.

Occasionally you will find a unit operating P-25 in the clear, no doubt due to operator error. That's about it.

Federal Freqs

Sorry for the delay in reading this thread. I have been recently searching the 402~420 Mhz Fed band and have "found" several freqs in use. Most are P25 and I believe part of the Hill Field trunking system. There is one that I'm certain is US Postal Service use.

Most of the general federal services run P25 in the clear. However the law enforcement side will run full time encypted. Those who operate f/t encypted have the modes "strapped" to be secure all the time, and the operator cannot change it.

Those who run clear may have the option via a push button, but in the P25 mode, clear and encypted comms sound the same to the user so there really isn't a need to look down at the display to wonder if the radio is encypted or not.

Where I am, the NPS in two locations went P25 this year, secure equipped, but not used. In fact they don't evey have a KVL here. However, should the need arise or a letter from headquarters comes down, a KVL can be brought in and the radios can be loaded in 10 seconds.
