I bought an HP-1 as soon as it came out and I loved it! My only gripe was that I never really had a great place to mount it in my Subaru Forester.
About a month ago I decided to replace the double din car radio with a single din radio and a BCD996XT.
It all fit...it looks and works great and then I went to program it....THEY WERE RIGHT!!!!
When the HP-1 came out....many of the people on this site said this scanner was too easy to operate and "Dumbed Down" the hobby. THEY WERE RIGHT!
Before the HP-1, I had a BCD396XT and I knew that handheld backwards and foreword! Now I don't have a clue....or I should say "didn't" have a clue. Thanks to FreeScan and the easier to read BCD996XT manual, I'm back in business!
Now on 11/16 Uniden will probably come out with a single din version of the HP-1! My wife will kill me when that shows up on the Amex bill!!!!

Here is the BCD996XT installed below aClarion CZ701. I thought the Clarion would generate more heat than the 996XT so I put the Clairon on top. I used. RoadPro 2.75 external speaker, you can just see it in a storage area in front of the gear shift. I used a SpectrumForce 800mhz antenna placed in the upper right of the windshield.(sorry, couldn't get the antenna in the pic) The whole thing works great! Sorry the pic came out sideways. Also, I couldn't use the provided din sleeves, I had to attach both units to the frame provided by Crutchfield.I think that's called an IOS installation. Apparently that's the only way to do this in a 2011 Subaru Forester. I had to cut out the bottom and part of the sides of the mount to fit the BCD996XT.

Now that is nice. I REALLY like that. I am thinking of doing the same in my 2008 Ranger. Did you run a speaker for it?

Thank you for rotating the pic!
Correction on the radio.....it's a Clarion CZ702. I don't recommend it...the display just isn't bright enough and it doesn't want to pair with my iPhone 5 automatically...but that's for a different forum.
I think you can use din sleeves in the Ranger.
If Uniden comes out with a single din version of the HP-1 on Saturday, I don't know what I'll do....one of the problems with the HP-1 in mobile use is that you have to go through several screens to change systems where as with the 996, you just press a key.
I must say I got such a kick out of using the GPS option on the HP-1, I drive from CT to the Houlton,ME area a few times a year and I loved how the scanner would change stations as I travelled using the GPS puck.
We'll see what happens!
