This R7100 is over my head

The only dc plug i can find is this one from ebay. i would not waste time getting this if you really want to operate this on dc.

Thanks, I've already looked at that one. As I posted earlier in on another thread, a local friend that's a ham operator had an extra one that he gave me. I only wish it were a little longer. By the way. Do I just unplug the connector with the short wire and plug the power cord in it place?

Yes. The plug with the jumper is only necessary when you use the internal power supply.

Yes i would think so the plug wouldn't fit otherwise. as for being too short you get some wire and add to it. you could just use butt ends and crimp them together.

That's an awesome receiver (more of a scanning capable receiver than a scanner as we know and love them). I had one for years (until I was unemployed and forced to sell it) and I admit that initially, it's a bit tricky to learn. Hang in there, you'll get it down in short order.

With many of the police/fire/ambulances going to trunked systems, you won't be able to follow -everything-, but I'm confident that you'll find lots of neat stuff to listen to.

I used to listen to hams, CBers, low band VHF comms (when the skip is in), have heard satellites, meteor pings from TV stations (before they went digital), railroads, aircraft, McDonalds, Walmart, all kinds of stuff!

First half is noise squelch, second half of turn is S meter squelch. The R8500 also does the same thing.

Here is the answer to your squelch question.
The squelch attenuator (approx 10 dB) allows you to reduce interference from strong nearby signals.

On the second half the signal must be stronger then the S meter reading on the radio to break the squelch and audio to come through. You can turn the squelch up high enough to cut out weaker distant stations if desired.

Well I got my antenna mounted and in the air at 35' but the only thing I can receive so far on the R7100 is FM broadcast stations, 11 meter band, local police and weather channels. Where can I read about which frequencies are on which mode?

Program Steps:

1. Use MEMORY- CH DOWN & UP buttons to select what channel number (000-099) to be programmed.

2. Enter frequency (162.55)

3. Make certain FM N is displayed, if it isn't, press the FM/N key

4. Press ENT (yellow) key

5. Hold MW (Memory Write) button down for three seconds, doing so will cause (162.55) to be retained for selected channel number in step 1.

After you've entered multiple frequencies, use the DOWN & UP to select the channel/frequency you want to monitor.

Practice entering all weather frequencies into different channels using the same above steps.

This may be a dumb question but what order the frequencies are put in is how it will scan even when they are not in numerical order right?

Modes are pretty easy. Try all the modes your radio supports until you find the one that works best for a specific signal

As a general rule voice transmissions above 29.5 MHz are NFM and almost all voice below that freq is in AM or SSB. As with any "general rule" there are notable exceptions. The FM Broadcast Band (87.5 - 108 MHz) is in WFM, as is some TV audio scattered across a wide range of frequencies. The aviation VHF band (118 to 137 MHz) is pretty much all AM, and aviation use in the UHF region (220-400 MHz) is also AM, although several FM services can be found in that range also. And at the bottom end of any ham band you can find CW, SSB, and AM transmissions, although the majority of ham traffic in the VHF/UHF region is NFM or digital, and the digital is most often still digital format over FM.

I've got a hard copy of the manual. I'm trying to understand it. Unfortunately, being a disabled veteran, the medication VA has me on doesn't allow me to retain a lot of the information. Making it difficult to translate what I read into actions. I appologize for sounding like I'm thick between the ears but I have no control over that. I know it sound odd that I can understand instructions better when it's more in layman terms and make adjustments on the receiver right then while it's fresh.

You are correct. When you put the R7100 in scan mode, it scans the lowest channel number to the highest channel number. Remember, a scan bank can scan up to 100 (000 to 099) channels at a time.

I thought you just didn't see mt post. i am not familiar with the 7100 so i am learning just as you are just by searching the net.i i was close to ya i would have a sit down and we could play. it' just like when i got into ham i bought a kenwood ts430s and had to learn it. the sad part came when it quit working and i had to repair it.

It would have been nice if the R7100 was built with a dedicated scanner with one bank to receive whatever signal. The other bank(s) could be used to program the preferred frequencies. Are there any receivers (not scanners) that do that?
