1) Viewsat Pro DVB-S receiver, Goodwill, $10 in 2011. This is the receiver that introduced me to DVRs, as it has USB2 jacks one can connect an external hard drive to.
2) Realistic PRO-2004, Goodwill again, $15 in 2012. Haven't done any mods to it other than removing the built-in transformer and the obligatory diode-7 cut, even though there's nothing to listen to these days on the band it affects. Why? Because I can. The backlight's a little dark on the left side but otherwise is fully functional; looks and works perfectly.
3) "Sleepless in Seattle" and "Koyaanisqatsi" on laserdisc, Goodwill still again, $5 each two Wednedsays ago. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
The thing I love about Goodwill is oftentimes the electronics people there have no idea what they have, so they have no idea how they should price things and end up price them low so they'll (hopefully) move off the shelf more quickly. This can also be a major disadvantage. Those two Wednesdays ago I came across an NEC PBX switch (no phones, naturally) complete with a leaking SLA backup battery and crystallised sulphuric-acid electrolyte all over the battery tray and motherboard underneath. The thing was totally worthless and a potential safety/health hazard, yet they wanted $50 for it.
Now if I were working there, things like that would end up directly in the skip, no questions asked.
