To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a TK2170 that I'm trying to program. The problem I'm having is, I need to use it as a pager as well. I have all the Tone A/Tone B codes but I don't know what to do from here?? Am I limited to how many I can set, am I limited by frequency? Any and all help would be awesome!

OK, lets set up a simple two tone A-B decode channel. Assume you have channel programmed that you want to set up as a pager. I program a separate receive only channel to be used as a pager channel. You will need KPG101-D FPU software to set up.

In the program software, go to EDIT>2-tone. Select DECODE (2-TONE 1) tab. Use default (CALL FORMAT A-B, TRANSPOND = NO, ALERT TONE = 1). Enter your codes into A and B. Reset timer is how long after decode the radio will reset back into pager mode.

Now go to the channel you want to use as a pager. Set OPT SIGNAL as 2-TONE 1.

At the bottom, click ZONE EDIT. Set OPTIONAL SIGNALLING DECODE CONDITION as QT/DQT ( If pages are sent without QT or DQT radio will not decode, change this to CARRIER).
Set AUDIO CONTROL as QT/DQT AND OPTIONAL SIGNALING. This will keep the radio silent until a page is decoded. If you would like to monitor channel and respond to a page (beep/LED flash) set this as "OR".

That should be it. Back to the 2-TONE edit. You can see you can plug in tones C and D. You can get the radio to respond to several combinations of tones. There are also three tabs for setting up tones (2-TONE 1,2,3) but only one of these can be assigned to any one channel. Also, do not use scan when the radio is to be used as a pager, set it on the one channel and leave it. Good luck!

Thank you! That helps big time!!

Is there anyway to scan and be able to use it as a pager or is the person going to be stuck on just one channel when he wants to use it as a pager?

Also, Do I need to set up a button for "2 Tone" or is that just if I want to send pages?

A button set as 2-TONE is for encode only.

You can try scan. It will only work if paging channel is set for priority. A non priority channel will have dropouts as the radio checks the priority channel for activity which kills the signaling decode. As a priority channel, decode depends on the delay between the time dispatch keys up and the tones go out. If the delay is a second or more, it should work. You can also play with the LOOKBACK TIME A in the scan tab to try and dial this in.
