• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello all,
I am having a bit of a problem being able to read and/or write this radio. I work in a radio shop (don't work directly with Kenwood products) and have the correct cable and software (kpg-36) and (kpg-89d). However, my trouble is, when i go to write or read, it progresses almost to the end and then bonks out and states to check all COM port connections. I have checked my COM port on my lap top and desk top, also checked and tested the programming cable. and all worked. any ideas? any suggestions? Thanks.

Are you using a USB-serial adaptor? Have you cleaned the contacts on the radio and cable? Is the battery charged?

Which version of the software are you using? Are you using an OEM or aftermarket cable?

Nope. not using a USB. yes, have cleaned the contacts on both the cable and radio. i did however put the battery on the charger tonite for a full charge in the morning on a hunch. Am using an OEM cable. have to double check the version but it is however a "sample" version. It has worked several times in the past though.

Ive not worked with sample versions, if you continue to have problems, it may just be the software.

From my experience the Serial version of the KPG-36 will not work on a 2180. You need the USB version. I dont know why but when I changed cables it worked.

The OEM KPG-36 is a serial cable, not USB and it should work fine. My OEM and aftermarket cables are both serial and have programmed many 2180s without issue.

Interesting. Mine would not program. I used the Serial KPG-36 that I had used for years on my 280's and when we got 2180s it wouldnt work until I bought the USB version.
