To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a TK-250G that won't read or write with the programming software. It is not an issue with my software or cable since my other two radios read and write just fine. I'm guessing the "main programming" option is disabled in the configuration. Is there any way to bypass this and program the radio with the KPG-23D software?

What model are your other two radios? If they are also 250's you should have no problem doing the third.

Are you getting this radio into "PC" mode before trying to read or write?

Both radios are TK-250Gs. Of course I am placing them into PC mode before attempting to read or write.

How can I check that?

The radio works fine with the current codeplug if that's any help.

I put it in PROG mode by holding the backlight button and the scan button as I turned the radio on. Then I followed the instructions in the readme.txt file that I got with the software. Although I am unable to copy the tk250.hex file that the readme file says to. I get the "unable to write to file com1" error. However, the radio does show a checksum of 2B91 after I try to copy the file.

I am not sure there is a way to bypass a disabled Main Programming option. Having owned "several" TK-250(G), I will have to say this (with prior experience in this of course), if your firmware was corrupt, you would have nothing more than a brick. I have had a TK-250(G) that had the firmware flash to corrupt, and there is no return from that. The radio became 100% useless (except as a nice paperweight).

And just for reference, what version of the KPG-23D are you using?

Using version 1.01. I tried to use version 2.02 but could not find a download that would run. I think I'll just have to take a chance on getting another one and hope that main programming isn't disabled.

Any idea whether it is still possible to clone the programming from another tk250G to a radio with main programming disabled?

Thanks for your help. I just replaced the main board (the one that the speaker plugs into) with the board from another tk250g that was missing the antenna jack. Seems to read and write just fine now. I also got a working copy of kpg23d version 2.02
