To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

With the TK-790 is the ignition sense wire mandatory or can I disable ignition sense in the programming software?

I plan to install my TK-790 in my vehicle using a relay to provide power instead of wiring to the ignition and I'm wondering if this will cause any issues. This means that power will actually be cut to the radio when the vehicle is turned off and and a door is opened (radio will be on a relay controlled by accessory delay).

I have a tk-690 that has no ignition sense. What I don't know is if it's controlled by a jumper in the radio or not. I don't remember it in the software.

Other issue might be that the radio will not turn on by itself after loosing power to the battery supply but you would have to experiment with that...

There are jumpers that need to be set on the control board to enable ignition sense on a new radio. If you are buying a used radio that has ignition sense set up, you'll need to undo the jumpers back to factory.
The benefit to using the ignition sense circuit is that you can set a power off timer in the programming software. Useful if you want the radio to stay turned on for a certain amount of time after shutting off the ignition. Also, ignition sense will also allow you to enable/disable things like horn alert function while driving.

OK, so I need to set the jumpers in order to disable ignition sense.

I want my radio controlled by my vehicle's accessory delay, not the internal power off timer.

Okay, so I took a look at the service manual. Which one would I want to use from the picture below.

Should I use the first one and then disable "timed power off" in the programming software?

How exactly does the default option work if the ignition sense is disabled but timed power off is not?

OK, now I have another question.

Will the radio be OK if I splice the ignition sense wire with a 3A fuse into the radio power harness? I want to make sure the radio will be OK if I'm switching the main power lead and not using the ignition sense to control the radio.

Run the red lead and ignition sense lead to the same power take off point. The radio will be fine with the power shutting off and on. Cal Fire 790s came standard with ignition sense and are hooked to switched battery in an engine this way all the time and work fine.
