Amtrak's policy is plain and simple,
Be Considerate of Others, Please

To maintain a pleasant environment for all passengers, we require that when using radios, CD players, DVD players, TVs, and all other audio/visual devices, passengers use earphones or headphones, and that the volume be kept low.

Also, in consideration of others, please switch cell phones, electronic watches, pagers, and PCs to silent mode
My SOP as an Amtrak Conductor was, you may do anything you like as long as you do not "rain on someone's parade" if you do I'll do what I need to do according to the policies and rules.

And i feel the same way you do, i rode the Empire Builder and the Cardinal from Portage, WI to Cincinatti, OH and had with me my cell, laptop, scanner, and ham HT. As i`ve said before, the HT was turned off before the train got to POG (portage) and was left off for the duration of the run, laptop was off as i didn`t really wanna unpack it just to have to repack it later :), and the scanner was plugged into my Ipod headset streight away after i was on the train. So you`re very correct, and that is the way it should be handled IMO. In fact the folks on the train thought it was kinda cool to have a few folks that were "doing Dayton", and were more than happy to let me listen to stuff on the scanner as long as i had my Ipod headset hooked up, which i did. So i totally dig this, and couldn`t agree more, keep it low and ya won`t have a problem, OTOH i CAN defenitely understand if the conductor was being rude to the OP, if that had been me i would`ve probably been a little miffed, but would have also just tried to let it ride, no sense in opening up a big can o` you-know-what, given what i paid for my tickets, it`s just better to go along and be nice than risk gettin` tossed off the train over a radio. I'm glad that the conducter did his job. Get a pair of headphones.

Totally agree, just go along and be nice. Don`t get tossed off over something as small-time as a radio, it`s just not worth the headaches. N9NRA

I wasn't being obnoxious there was nobody there for me to bother which none on here that posted seems to understand... Explained it multiple times and have gotten the same answer... I know the policy and have since found a device to make sure it never happens again. Trust me if it was a packed train it wouldn't have been out loud... The other thing I don't think anyone realizes is that I'm a freshman in college I'm a kid I made a mistake its over...

If you can't find a way to monitor the radio in a public setting without alarming others around you, you need to find a new hobby. Hint......earplugs/headphones. Very simple and no need to discuss any further.

Good luck.

I wasn't being obnoxious...

Sure you were. Any reference to a ham licence in a "radio situation" outside of ham radio is obnoxious.

Sure there was... the conductor. Isn't that the whole point everyone has been trying to make to you?

...The other thing I don't think anyone realizes is that I'm a freshman in college I'm a kid I made a mistake its over...

I had you pegged for high school, so the "kid" part came through loud and clear.

Live and learn.

Guys, I think the OP understands the problem and knows how to deal with it in the future. Quit beating him up over it.

Thank you! That's what I have been saying! I was under a different understanding of the rules when I made the original post. I learned from it and that's it! Like beating a dead horse...

If he were to allow you to listen without an earphone he would have to let others listen to their audio devices. I would consider this a disruption on the train. Next time bring your earphone and follow the rules as established for all electronic devices.
