Where did this "tower" terminology come from? I was just reading about the Oakland CA system failure because of an overheated "tower". Last I recall a "tower" was an inanimate supporting structure for an antenna not an active electronic element. More of a rhetorical question I guess.

If you ever get the chance, ask to look inside of a tower enclosure or "shed" at the base of a tower. You'll see all kinds of racks of various equipment that are prone to overheating. Note the A/C installed in almost every tower shed you see. :)

yes, they probably meant the equipment using the tower is what overheated, not the actual physical structure itself. THAT would be some heat!

Yes I've been in the sheds. And up the towers. I am a former radio tech. :)

I've seen an overheated tower. It took a lightning strike to cause the aforementioned heat, but it certainly was heat that was the problem. :D

Great pics. Top mounted amplifiers are sure necessities to make up for the signal losses in the 700 to 1200 MHz frequencies when there are combiner signal losses coupled with the feedline signal losses at the feedline lengths necessary with most towers, and the amps are always a joy for the firefighting profession when lightning plays unfairly or the amps go on a suicide binge.

It looks like three (3) different towers to me!

And you never tried multiple times to explain what you did yet still got the confused look?

For some people the "tower" seems to encompass everything. "Ohhh, you work on the towers."

If memory serves, there was a line in an old song that went to the effect..."Burning up the telephone line". So this must be the 2010's update to that song. See what happens when people can't stop talking on their phones. :)

I'm going to take a guess they were talking about a computer failed, that happened to be in a tower case.
Or they may be calling the equipment rack a "tower", and something mounted in the rack failed.
