Well, the higher your antenna is, the farther off the horizon is. Since most of the frequencies you want to listen to are line of sight, the higher up it is the more you'll hear.
That comes at a cost, longer coaxial cable means more loss, but that loss may be offset by being able to hear more.
It also comes at the cost of supporting structure. For residential/hobby use, you are limited by what you are capable of putting up safely, HOA rules, wife, neighbors, etc.

At minimum you want this up above the tallest part of your roof to give it a good all around view.

Ok thanks for the help. My neigbors wont care its a family owned property with many humble single wides way down in the sticks lol.

If you're using RG-6, get F. If you're using LMR-400 or some other 50-ohm cable, UHF or N, preferably N.

Then the F connector makes the most sense; one less adapter between antenna and coax.

It seems a lot of this coax is copper clad aluminum cable. I found some that claims solid copper core. Which is better or does it really matter??
