Lots of places, but they are not legal to monitor (at least not the monitors and phones). They are on 2.4 GHz, 900 MHz, 49 MHz, 46 MHz, and I'm sure some left around 1.7 MHz. Bugs can be anywhere. TV can be found on 54-88 MHz, 174-216 MHz, and 470-806 MHz.

- Like cordless phone base sets,.. they retransmit any sounds within a certian distance on the air..... Cordless Phone sets don't have to be in use for you to hear whats going on in a home using them.... Just turned on.

No.

And properly operating phones tx when not in use or certain models while in some malfunctioning state tx all the time? The outlawing of cordless phone monitoring was a special case because it involves telephones and there has been a declared expectation of privacy. I didn't think it applied to anything else like room monitors.

The thing with cordless phones is this: They have to TX signal 24/7 to the handsets in order for them to be able to recieve incoming calls at distance....

As far as I know there is NO federal statute regarding baby monitors... YET.... WEG

I have not heard of a criminal case involving them... But if one did happen, I would imagine that they too would be included in the ECPA. Currently they are not as they do not fall in the category of phones, faxes, or encrypted signals. If you do monitor them, and happen to get busted eavesdroping on the privacy of someone, and it goes to court... I am pretty sure you'd lose, and it'll be another blow to those of us that use scanners.

I dunno about that.

I dunno about that either. 1. How would it go to court and 2. What would you lose? To me, its like having your drapes open. Anyone is free to peep.

No, phones don't have to TX until they initiate an outgoing (or see an incomming) call.

As for the baby monitors, well, most of them use cordless frequencies.

All I have to say about the going to court is this:
"Loose lips sink ships"

Eneough siad....

And yes the cordless phone base must TX at all times to the handset.
Thats how they work. At least the Lo Band ones.... the 800 MHz, and 900 MHz, and the 2.4 giggers do it differently

I call BS!

Why would anyone burn battery all the time.
I have NEVER had a cordless phone that TXed when it was not in use.

And I have had a LOT of them!

Sure, if "broken" or off hook, and maybe there is an odball brand that is poorly designed, but it would be the exceptiuon rather than the rule (even for the old 1.7/49 units!

And I was going to say that for sure the low band phones don't continually tx while the high freq ones might.

And I guess if you overheard someone reading their bank account numbers on the baby monitor and then used this information to commit fraud, you'd land yourself in a bunch of trouble. I don't know that they could charge you with the actual intercept of the information or your means of interception. I think the only possible charges would be the actual fraud. The fraud charge would, of course, result regardless of using the scanner.

The BASE station part of the phone on the LO BANDers does TX 24/7......

Do a freq search around an area with the LO BAND cordless ones.....youll soon hit every one within two miles and youll hear everything going on within twenty feet of that base station. Why do folks always argue over things that are fact? The BASE STATION parts do TX, and passivley RX continuesly! There is no wasting of battery on the base stations.. those are plugged in the wall. I have stated all along that the base staions do TX...... I NEVER siad the handsets TX 24/7.. read more carefully please so we don't keep argueing over BS....

Rant over (just tired of being argued with on a point that is fact)

IF this were true, and I'm not remotely convinced that it is, wouldn't the base need its own microphone to pick up these sounds that it constantly tx's?

Perhaps you are thinking of cellular devices? Not to be snippity, but calling something fact doesn't make it true.

Well I guess if the bone has a intercom feature.

Like I said, A few models might, but certainly not the rule.

I still have trouble believing it, as the receiver always receiving would use more energy than one just looking for carrier or a "ring-out" signal.

But what do I know?

Maybe some transmit all the time but my old lowband unit didn't. It would send a pulsed page to the handset that was listening in a continuous RX state. When the handset heard it it would ring. The user would hit the on and both would go into the full duplex mode.

I's kind of like a mini cell site. If the handset is out of reach then you're out of luck.

Not to start an argue again. But on my 46MHz phone, it doesn't transmit all of the time, I listen to it on my scanner, so I know.

Baby monitors are fun. A long time ago I found out "who's cheating who" at my neighbor's house while the hubby was at work. Mr. Mail Man was delivering more than mail that day! LOL
