Completely Banned for the Greater Good
I posted some pics of this antenna a while ago on a rental, but I took this a few steps farther - this will show you how obsessed I am about bringing my antenna with me when I'm on the road in CA  !!
This the antenna mounted in a rather unique way. This is an old A/S MON-52 connected to a TRAM mobile-to-base kit. The bracket is just clamped between the scanner case and the large mobile mounting knobs. The ground plane radials are about 20" long:
This little collar made it possible for me to not have to pack this giant antenna in a cardboard travel tube! My friend machined this for me out of steel and installed (2) tiny Allen keys in it. I cut the upper whip about 2" over the plastic coil (yes, it was painful to do this ) but when the two parts are coupled I can detect NO negative effect on reception:
Here's a close-up of the base kit. Yes, the radials are a little bent but it doesn't seem to have any bad effects:
And here's a closer shot of the antenna mid-section:
All in all, this works GREAT. From my hotel room in Oyster Point CA I can copy all of San Mateo VHF-high and UHF PD/FD VERY clearly. San Jose comes in very well, Santa Clara County a little scratchy but overall acceptable.
The thing that amazed me was I can hear CHP on 42MHz VERY well! Almost "5 by 5".
