A question I have on trunking system, when in my vehicle monitoring Mass State Police, if I put my scanner on hold to listen to one area (ie D 1) are the site locations still scanning or are they on hold too. I hope that my question isn’t to confusing. Thank you.

When holding on a system, it holds on the talk group and frequency that's active when you press hold.

Most likely the control channel frequency.

Watch the display for clues.

What doctordialtone said.

If you stop while the radio is scanning the system it will hold on the control channel and you'll hear the sound of the data stream and nothing else (sounds somewhat like a diesel truck running). No voice traffic. If you press hold while it's receiving traffic on a talkgroup it will hold on that talkgroup. You can use the selector knob to then change talkgroups.

I think you guys are confused on his question.

What he's asking is if you hold on a talkgroup, does the scanner continue to scan the different trunked sites within the system.
I just checked on my 996XT, and the answer is , when you hold on a TG, it also holds on the trunked site.

So if onto H-PTL-2 within Zone 03, but drive out of the area of Zone 03, you'll no longer hear the site. At least that's how my 996XT is behaving.
I know the the HP series (436hp, 536hp both will continue to "scan" all the sites within your system when holding on a TG. If you want it to lock on the site, you need to use the site hold function)

That's why I asked him to specify which model scanner, because the 996XT behaves differently than the HP series and SDS scanners.

"HOLD" holds on everything on the 996, 396 and 325 scanners.

With the x36HP and SDS scanners I never hear the control channel data stream. It's been a while since I've owned a 996 or 396 of any flavor, but I think you can manually step to a control channel frequency to verify if you are hearing the data stream, but if you hold on a TG, it doesn't do that.

Someone with a x96 can confirm that, but it's my recollection.
