I'm trying an encoder push but am not sure I can test it myself...and get an error when I try to grab the stream. It may be because the sending machine and receiving are the same, dunno. Anyhow, if you want to try give this a shot: http://68.171.134.111:8080 It should in theory come in through WMP. -Rod-

Yeah, I've got the port in my router opened. Dunno what's going on. I've been messing with computers since the Trash-80 and Commie-dore 64. I still hate them, every single day.

K...it appears to be working. Feel free to give it a listen and let me know. There's currently a fire going on somewhere in the Valley and they are asking for a ladder company. -Rod-

A trace of hum when there's no signal. You might want to turn the scanner volume up and the computer gain down to compensate. The level is good, though - I can't hear any distortion, even on loud signals.

Unfortunately Winamp can't handle an mms link. And, of course, you're not streaming the alpha text. But it sounds good.

I've been told the alpha tags can not be streamed. Am I wrong in that? I'd really like those tags to go out...
The volume controls on this are really touchy. I set the volume for an average signal, then some barrel chested cop with a booming voice a mere 2 miles away pegs the needles. Heh. -Rod-

Connect your winamp to the address in my signature. Unless I'm deluded ;) , whoever told you that is wrong, if you're running a Uniden scanner and Windows.

mms://ip:port/.wma (the .wma is the trick).

<BREAK>

Although Al42 will probably shoot me in the head and leave me bleeding in a dark alley...text tags can be transmitted to WMP v7.0 through his favorite $60.00 Simplecast program. Altrhough it is rumored to exist in later versions of WMP; I could only get it to work in WMP 7.0

However, for those who are a bit more sensible (or cheap as my wife calls me; she is STILL bitter over the 3 carat cubic zirconia (and I thought bigger was better)), text tags can be sent to not only Winamp users, but also iTunes users (for the Mac diehards) in MP3 format via FREE software.

Has anyone thought to combine the data link from the serial port with the audio and send it all out to an app built just for this purpose? Encode it together on one end, decode it all on the other. The user sees whatever is on the front panel display in real time. -Rod-

Aren't those services rather than standalone apps though?

Also, I know I saw a workaround for the number of WME client connections. I'm Using V9, limited to 5 connections but know it can be boosted to 50 via the registry. I can't find the thread :( -Rod-

From the Encoder Help file....

To increase the maximum number of direct connections
In Registry Editor, use the tree view to navigate to the following subkey: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Microsoft\Windows Media Tools\Encoder\MaxClientConnections.
Edit the subkey so that it reflects the maximum number of direct connections you want to allow. The maximum possible number is 50.
Caution

Incorrectly editing the registry can severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the computer.

Shoot you? Not at all. But I'd sure like to know the protocol to do it - I'd modify my program to send alpha tags to it - even 7.0.

Winamp I know - so tell me how to send it to iTunes users. Or will iTunes pick up the same tags that Winamp will?

For future reference there's now a link in my sig to my online feed. During today's JetBlue incident the feed was sending out Fire/EMS with on and off LAPD and ARTCC comms. At the time the plane touched down there were 20 clients connected...a good showing and there were NO bandwidth problems. It was interesting to watch FOX on one computer screen, and watch/hear the feed on the laptop. Anyhow, next time there's something major going on in L.A., or if ya just want to listen in for general purposes, the feed is up from about 0800-0100 west coast time. -Rod-

iTunes will pick it up the same as Winamp. Just a bonus for the Mac fans. As for WME, I am at a loss. Somehow the Simplecast people figured it out and were able to build in an encoder for WiMP, but I couldn't begin to tell you how they did it.

On the soapbox, I don't see why there are so many die hard WiMP fans out there. Winamp can do everything WiMP can do and a heck of a lot more. It is one of the more robust media players out there that supports darn near every format (both video and audio). Oh well.
