To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Where is that posted? All I see is the same old blog link to the contacts file.

Go to the TYT site and it is in the Downloads Section. Actually, they have a few but only some are for the 100,000 contact. You want the one posted on 7/28 version 3.35 firmware, and follow the directions

The new version, P3.35 uploaded by TYT on 7/28, fixes the issue with uploading the contact list and getting the FW error. However...is anyone else still having odd issues like random reboots? Also, has anyone used the Monitor function on a DMR system and got it to work correctly?? Seems to work fine on analog systems.

menu, utilities, program radio, add ch. I don't think you can switch a programmed channel from analog to digital. There are too many "digital" options that get in the way. Easier to just add a channel. I know when using the software, if you start in analog, then realized you ment to add digital, you select digital and many of your choices revert to default.

You're assuming I'm using USB 3 ports which I am not. 2.0 only using Win-7 OS. Again, in device manager it shows the ports all working fine and the cable has no yellow caution symbols in the port it is connected to. Either way, the radio is on its way back via ups.

Manny

My windows 8.1 machine won't pick up the USB cable connected to any of the USB 3 connectors, but is happy with the USB2 on the front panel - I wonder if they've now fiddled with their versions of the prolific chip and haven't quite sorted it out properly - in that the USB port doesn't recognise the chip properly so tries to read it in usb 3 mode, and fails?

How do you access vfo mode?

Go to Menu/Utilities/Radio Settings/Mode and switch to MR mode from CH mode. Hit the back button to go back to your main screen which will now show frequencies instead of channel names. Now long press the back button to enter VFO mode.

TYT just dropped two more MD-2017 firmware updates today within a few minutes of each other on their downloads page. Bad thing is that the page wrapped in the zip file explaining what was fixed hasn't been updated. Has anyone pulled the trigger on this update yet??

Everything in the file indicates it's the same as the old one, same folder name, same instruction PDF but after writing it the FW revision is now 3.036. There is no indication what changed and I can't find anything different.

Same result here...P3.38 on my GPS version, but didn't notice anything different yet. If they got rid of the random rebooting, i'd be happy.

I have a non GPS model. I have never had a single reboot. I wonder if it's a GPS model issue.

So, I've had my MD2017 for about a week now and I've noticed some quirks. I've also got a couple of complaints. I haven't experimented with digital communications yet, so all my observations pertain to analog operations.

I've had no issues programming the radio using Win 7. I did have a few attempts to read the radio that failed, though. I've found that after reading the radio and/or writing to it, one must unplug the USB cable from the computer before you can successfully read/write to the radio again. A minor inconvenience.

When the radio is receiving a signal that breaks the squelch, you cannot access any of the menu functions. This needs to be corrected.

Speaking of squelch, mine seems to be set incredibly tight. I only find two settings, normal and tight, and neither is satisfactory for me. Both are set too tight. If you lock the squelch open to hear a less than full strength signal, you cannot transmit. Having to lock open the squelch/monitor function to hear and then unlock/turn off the monitor function to transmit is unacceptable. I'm new to TYT radios, so I have no idea if this can be adjusted. I certainly hope so!

The trackball is ridiculous. It's much too sensitive and way too easy to bump you off your selected channel. Luckily, recent firmware adds the ability to lock it. I would have preferred a 4-way rocker like "M" uses on their XTS5000's. I'm still scratching my head as to why they thought a trackball would work on a radio.

When monitoring two frequencies (or bands) at once, the radio transmits on whichever frequency (or band) was active last. If I'm using one band to monitor a frequency (like a public service frequency programmed for Rx only) and the other for amateur radio communications, the radio will try to transmit on the Rx-only public service frequency if it was the last active channel. There needs to be a way to select a priority VFO/band for transmitting so you can communicate on one while "monitoring" another. Perhaps there is and I'm just overlooking this in the programming. There is a way to "mute" one frequency/band, but that sort of defeats the purpose of the dual band radio, no?

When switching zones the radio feels lethargic. It takes too much time. I'm hoping a firmware update will address this issue.

Battery life seems marginal at best. I'm hoping it's just the 3.35 firmware I'm currently running.

The display backlight needs to be adjustable. I'd be happy with a low/med/high setting or a 1 through 5 level setting. Not only would it save on battery life, but it wouldn't light up the inside of my car at night when driving.

Speaking of the display, it would be nice if the font, font size or display could be adjusted a bit. I'd like to have more than 9 digits of info displayed without the display having to scroll. Also, mine has a couple pieces of lint inside the case between the clear plastic and the LCD panel. Not a deal breaker but it makes me wonder about the conditions where the radios are assembled.

Other than these few things, so far I'm happy with the radio. It sounds good, feels good in the hand and looks good. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware there was a cheaper source, so I paid $219 for mine.

This is a common problem with most, if not all of the low cost one chip Chinese radios. Not enough ram in the radio to produce audio, & do menu functions at the same time. A hardware fix is needed.

I kinda figured that was the problem. Thanks for the confirmation. Guess I'll scratch that one off my wish list...

What I did was went to DMR MARC and did a data dump of the world DMR contacts. Converted it to a CSV file which was relatively easy.

Then go to "Write Contacts" under the program menu, "IMPORT" the CSV file, In the same dialog box "WRITE" to the radio after it says upload successful. Note: It takes a while to write to the radio.

Went to the website here (http://www.dmr-marc.net/cgi-bin/trbo-database/datadump.cgi) and downloaded the .csv file. I clicked the top link and it downloaded a file already in .csv format. I tried to import this file into the CPS (ver. 1.17) and it failed to import and gave me an "Excel fail" error message. I opened the file in Excel, seems fine, re-saved the file and tried with newly saved .csv file and got the same error from the CPS.

What am I doing wrong? Am I supposed to modify this file in some way before importing?

How are you trying to import the contacts...Program>Write Contacts>Import>Write...don't use the Digital Contacts tab in the left menu window.
