So, I've had my MD2017 for about a week now and I've noticed some quirks. I've also got a couple of complaints. I haven't experimented with digital communications yet, so all my observations pertain to analog operations.
I've had no issues programming the radio using Win 7. I did have a few attempts to read the radio that failed, though. I've found that after reading the radio and/or writing to it, one must unplug the USB cable from the computer before you can successfully read/write to the radio again. A minor inconvenience.
When the radio is receiving a signal that breaks the squelch, you cannot access any of the menu functions. This needs to be corrected.
Speaking of squelch, mine seems to be set incredibly tight. I only find two settings, normal and tight, and neither is satisfactory for me. Both are set too tight. If you lock the squelch open to hear a less than full strength signal, you cannot transmit. Having to lock open the squelch/monitor function to hear and then unlock/turn off the monitor function to transmit is unacceptable. I'm new to TYT radios, so I have no idea if this can be adjusted. I certainly hope so!
The trackball is ridiculous. It's much too sensitive and way too easy to bump you off your selected channel. Luckily, recent firmware adds the ability to lock it. I would have preferred a 4-way rocker like "M" uses on their XTS5000's. I'm still scratching my head as to why they thought a trackball would work on a radio.
When monitoring two frequencies (or bands) at once, the radio transmits on whichever frequency (or band) was active last. If I'm using one band to monitor a frequency (like a public service frequency programmed for Rx only) and the other for amateur radio communications, the radio will try to transmit on the Rx-only public service frequency if it was the last active channel. There needs to be a way to select a priority VFO/band for transmitting so you can communicate on one while "monitoring" another. Perhaps there is and I'm just overlooking this in the programming. There is a way to "mute" one frequency/band, but that sort of defeats the purpose of the dual band radio, no?
When switching zones the radio feels lethargic. It takes too much time. I'm hoping a firmware update will address this issue.
Battery life seems marginal at best. I'm hoping it's just the 3.35 firmware I'm currently running.
The display backlight needs to be adjustable. I'd be happy with a low/med/high setting or a 1 through 5 level setting. Not only would it save on battery life, but it wouldn't light up the inside of my car at night when driving.
Speaking of the display, it would be nice if the font, font size or display could be adjusted a bit. I'd like to have more than 9 digits of info displayed without the display having to scroll. Also, mine has a couple pieces of lint inside the case between the clear plastic and the LCD panel. Not a deal breaker but it makes me wonder about the conditions where the radios are assembled.
Other than these few things, so far I'm happy with the radio. It sounds good, feels good in the hand and looks good. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware there was a cheaper source, so I paid $219 for mine.
