Going to need a little more information on what you are hearing....and who you are listening too

monitoring the bronx precinct, occasionally i'll hear heavy breathing or laughing during a transmission. the dispatcher will say "unauthorized transmission" then announce the time. and occasionally a dispatcher will give a sprint number for a job. separate, not related to unauthorized transmission.

An unauthorized transmission is when a regular person comes up on one of the NYPD frequencies and starts playing sound clips or making weird sounds (whistling, etc.) When they mention the "Sprint number", they probably want an officer to come up on his/her Nextel.

Not exactly...but I can see how you made the connection. SPRINT is the name of NYPD's CAD system. It stands for "Special Police Radio Inquiry Network". A SPRINT # is a serial # generated by the system and assigned to a particular job.

Thanks for the correction. I was picking up NYPD down here last week and heard them mention the "Sprint number". I thought it would be odd that they would start calling their Nextels by a different name (how often does NYPD use Nextels?).

Same here. It often happens on a PD frequency around here (Berkeley Township, Ocean County).

They're not necessarily stolen radios...when I dispatched many moons ago for 5th and 6th Division radio in Manhattan North, all sorts of weird crap came over the radio...from the cops! Made the night go pretty quick...

Happened when I started listening to NYPD at the top of the broadcast band as a young kid. Probably even before I was born. Kiddies must play.

There have been instances over the years where buffs have their own portable built with NYPD frequencies programmed in and they made unauthorized transmissions.

Some NYPD guys have take home radios that have been stolen over the years.

Before the merger, most Transit Authority cops had taken home portables.

Hey, Arch...remember that a-hole "The Voice of God?" I lost count how many cops wanted to break his neck.

unauthorized transmissions

Damn, and when I think about what we used to do on our phone co radio's, the marx brothers or three stooges routines, animal sounds, etc. We knew it was "mission accomplished" when da boss would come into the crew room all flusterd, red faced and sputtering in the afternoon.
Ah!, for the good old days of the dreaded "finger waggle".

AEMTKieran,

I missed that "Voice of God" but did read a few years back in the Daily News about a guy from Queens caught and another from Riverdale for making unauthorized police transmissions. I hear that several news stations have their own portables with NYPD frequencies programmed into them.
