Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So I'm on the fence about buying a G5 or a G4 and a G2. I definitely want as much performance on VHF as I can, I rely on VHF more for work. For my VHF use is a mix of trunk and conventional systems but I also want to monitor 7/800 systems as well. From what I'm assuming with the G2 having the external antenna is going to be better than the vhf internal antenna in the G5.

For the same reasons, I tried utilizing both a G2 for VHF and a G5 for VHF & 7/800 and I found that the G2 was a lot better on VHF. Although it would be expensive, if you need both VHF and 7/800, you might be better with both a G2 and a G4.

I use a G3 and a G5, I tend to find the perform the same on VHF. Much of my coverage area is a fringe area. I am not sure if the G2 would be different.

The G3 and G5 with the VHF sub-band are both using the internal loop antenna for VHF, so the results would be the same. The G2 would see significant improvement as its single band using the external antenna.
