I have a lot of talkgroups in my scan list, if I avoid the ones I don't want to scan should I avoid them or delete them? If I avoid them does the scanner just skips them or would it make my scanner scan the list faster if I just delete them? Thank you..

If you think that the talkgroups might be of interest at certain times (but not 'right now'), then just park then in a Department that you set as avoided. You can always clear the avoid on that department if you want to put them back in your scanning sequence at some other time. If these are ones that you actually have no need for, then delete them.

But either way, you won't notice much, if any, change in scan speed. The scanner stops on a site for a system, then tries to receive & decode the control channel data. If it can, then it looks for any programmed talkgroups that are active, If none are, it moves on very quickly. You lose much more time, reducing scan speed, if you have multiple sites that either you don't need, or that (at your current location) you can't receive.

You could also put them in a separate department and assign a Quick Key to that department, and set it to "off".
Some people prefer to use Avoid, some prefer Quick Keys. Whatever works for you.

I think you are asking if “Avoid” would speed up scanning as opposed to deleting the TG’s you NEVER listen to all-together? As stated, “Avoid” those TG’s you may have occasion to listen to on occasion but delete those TG’s you never bother with. As for scanning speed, I don’t know for sure but would venture a guess that it’s a crap shoot. The scanner is still going to peruse the system that has the TG’s in question, but does it look at ALL TG’s and learn which are Avoided before moving on? Or, treat an Avoided TG in the same manner as it not being there to begin with? I’m thinking any difference would be so minimal as to not show a measurable increase or decrease in scanning speed...

Talkgroups are not scanned. They are indexed database records that are looked up each time the scanner gets a call notification from the system. There is no measurable speed penalty for having all talkgroups programmed; you can't see any difference in the time it takes to see the talkgroup info on WV-SIRN (which has over 1000 talkgroups in the system) and a simple system with fewer than 10 talkgroups. It's better to avoid talkgroups you don't want to hear rather than deleting them, because then you can still use ID SEARCH to find new talkgroups as they are added, which may be of interest. If you delete the talkgroup, then it will always come up when you have ID SEARCH on.
