Valid point, but you me and Jake ARE on the site, and people need to learn how to READ before running off thinking they know what is going on here.

I read and seen this when I bought my HP-1 three years ago. I had some rechargeable batteries laying around at the time and noticed they were different than the ones that came with the HP. That is how I knew this information.

Do you really think that any manufacturer is going to say, "Hey even though that new toy takes rechargeable batteries you cannot charge them in the toy"? Nope. Bad business.

It appears that three different batteries of 3 different capacities were installed. This can cause all kinds of problems. The lower-capacity battery is going to go dead before the other two and then the battery is going to be reverse charged by the other cells, which is very damaging. Then, when charging, the cell is going to be significantly overcharged with respect to the other two cells. You should always use batteries of the same size and type (meaning all three from the same manufacturer and same ratings) in any product, not just scanners.

This is not the kind of think we can warranty against. But, post photos of the damage if you can.

Get an external charger. You can buy them at Wal mart. Best buy etc. go get some new batteries and try those to see if the radio still works. Also plug in your usb cord and power the scanner on to see if it still works

How my going to charge my batteries so the next time this will happen

You will need to get another charger and batteries. Have you tried putting good batteries in the unit and see if it powers up? If not try that. This is the only way to know unless you plug the power cord in the HP-1 and try powering it that way.

This thread will guide you to some options on chargers and batteries:

I know you might not want to do this, but can you make LIScanner101 happy and confirm if we should or should not charge the batteries in the scanner.....lol

Thanks UPman.

Jake - First of all, please, do NOT worry :D ! NOBODY is mad at you. We're trying to help.

For some reason, Uniden has never expressly forbid or formally prohibited in-scanner charging, instead posting things that “sort of” prohibit it on this site, which is a poor excuse for putting it in writing at the corporate level. If there is anything at the corporate level that DOES warn about in-scanner charging then I missed it and I apologize for doing so, but I saw nothing in the manual. So, if you were trying to charge the RIGHT batteries in your scanner then you did nothing wrong from what I can see. However, it seems that you tried to charge higher-capacity batteries, which are bound to get much warmer than the stock batteries.

Be that as it may, you can most likely only do what you can do at the consumer level, and that is to find an external charger from another source to charge the batteries. There are people on here far more knowledgeable than I about the best charger for this application so I would defer to them for that data.

Thanks UPman.

Sorry, that's not going to pass muster, unless whatever UPMan posts here is legal copy and company-sanctioned. I would prefer to see something like what you're asking for on company letterhead, not just a post on a website.

Well, then, if that won't happen, then if somebody tries to charge stock HP-1 batteries IN an HP-1 and the device catches fire then Uniden is liable.

Do you understand and grasp the seriousness of this matter?

Jake, moving forward, use a good external charger that is recommended from the posters here who have had good experience with battery charging.

NO, I'ma too stupid to think for myself.....lol

I know what you are saying and going after, but in reality it is the end user who needs to do some research and reading before going off and screwing themselves outta money.

I did it and many others have also.

Official statement is in line with what I've said before. With good batteries, there is no prohibition against charging in the scanner.

Suppose my 82 year old neighbor decides to charge her HP-1 (equipped with STOCK batteries) and takes an afternoon stroll? Remember, STOCK batteries. What if the batteries overheat and catch fire?

I’m not talking about geeky research about the best charge rate for the batteries in question – I’m talking about SAFETY.

Forget about killing a $20 set of batteries, or even a $500 scanner – what about burning down a $850k house?

That’s all I’m saying here.

If there is a DANGER involved with using a product then the MANUFACTURER should make any restrictions required to be in place to limit that danger VERY CLEAR. That’s business 101.

Anyway, it looks like Uniden won’t address this.

Jake, onward and upward.
