Hi All,

Was on this forum years and years ago but lost interest in scanning. But i have the interest now. Its been a few years since i have used the 996t and its all coming back to me now. But having issues programming and listening to Melbourne Metro Radio (MMR) i can program it up but nothing happens also after all the googling i found out there has been quite a few firmware updates for the 996t but reading the instructions and when i try it tells me it doesn't match the 996t. Can someone please offer me advice

Welcome (back?) to the RR forums: Skimming through the RRDB entry, a good bit of the talkgroups listed are fully encrypted (mode "DE") and therefore cannot be monitored by any radio not intended to operate on the system. Only mode "D" talkgroups are clear and can be monitored. Also simulcast distortion may be a factor if you're monitoring the Melbourne simulcast & are within monitoring range of two or more towers. You'd be better off with a Uniden SDS100E or 200E to overcome simulcast distortion

Thanks Whiskey,

Its good to be back
I can get the RMR network. I understand the about the encrypted TGs its just weird that I used to be able to get them unencrypted radio traffic. I May be wrong my understanding is if I add a unencrypted TG and have it set to ID Scan only I should hear the TGs I have in the radio please correct me if I'm wrong. I am thinking about a new scanner.

What you will also find is that a lot of the RMR, specifically SES and in time CFA and FRV will be Phase II and the 996T can only do Phase I. On MMR these days you are limited to FRV and SES, all else is encrypted.

Correct. ID scan scans only what's programmed. ID Search scans what's programmed as well as what isn't. Doing a department (or group) hold on the "Unknown" department while on ID Search will only pass traffic from unknown talkgroups and squelch what's programmed
