So, the moral of this story is, DO NOT BUY VISTA!!
A bit off topic, but Vista was in alpha or beta before I ever updated to XP from 2K. I guess I will wait until the next one before I upgrade to Vista.

You know I was about to hit "submit" when a thought occurred to me...are you saying that a file saved by Vista is not able to be opened by a previous OS? If so, this is not good news!

Nope. I have ARC396 on my Vista laptop. I used my laptop to make the .pfl Profile file that I'm trying to upload to my 396T now.

If I download ARC396 on an XP computer, it will NOT open the .pfl file, whether I email it to myself, save it and try to open it, or try to open it from my flash drive.

I emailed my .pfl file to Shawn, (nova1010), and he said he couldn't open it either. But, it opens fine with my Vista laptop..

Crazy isn't it?

Ok, update, I CAN get it to upload a .mem file. I just uploaded it to my scanner now.

Can't get the .pfl file to work though.

The .mem file I have is just a System of conventional frequencies for several counties.

The .pfl file has this same conventional System, but has some trunked systems and some more conventional stuff as well.

Well I am confused, as I said, I don't have a 996T but I just downloaded ARC996 and played with it, doesn't the pfl files just tie together the various m96 files. In other words if you send the profile file, don't you have to send all the associated mem files also?

I was under the impression that a Profile file has multiple .mem files in it?

Maybe this is my flub up.... I have a .pfl file, and I have many Systems, and many groups within those systems in it.

I also have a .mem file, that I was just playing around with, then I made the .pfl Profile. So I take it I'm going to have to have several different .mem files, and upload them all individually, under thier assigned System Quick Key?

Well I just read the appropriate portions of the owners manual for ARC996. The profile only contains the file names and file locations of the various mem files. If you move them to somewhere else, they are removed from the profile. See section 2.12 of the PDF.

So I guess that's why I can't email them or transfer to my flash drive.. :(

So technically, they're all stuck on my Vista Laptop?

Does Uniden's UASD work on the Vista laptop? (You could just do this directly on the XP machine.)

Connect the 396 to the laptop, crank up UASD_BCD396T
Click on "Connect to Scanner"
Click on the "Scanner View" tab
Once it's finished reading the data in the scanner, you'll see a "Save" button in the corer of the display.
Hit the Save
Now, you can save all the existing systems in the scanner in the *.usd file format.
Also copy them onto your thumb drive.
Once you've done that, import them into ARC396 on the XP machine, or whatever. (It's an option on the File menu). Be sure and save them before exiting.

Is that whay you need to do, or did I misunderstand the problem.
