DANG IT! well good thing I only spent $3 on it... well that and what it cost to convert it to LIPO.

Quick off topic question.

Your scanner was the first ever digital P25 capable scanner I bought. I still have it. How did you convert to Li-Po? Custom made battery pack or do they sell 'em?

Edit-

Just pulled out this scanner. It absolutely CAN receive from 174-406 MHz (look on the battery cover). So yes, the military band is definitely covered and I entered some 300 MHz frequencies and successfully switched the Mode to FM. I confirmed this not with software, but by hand. Now, this scanner is only P25 phase I capable, not phase II. Also, you can go to: menu | Trunk | select the bank and Trunk type and select custom Type I or custom Type II. But if that military base is phase II this scanner will not decode the audio.

Can't edit my above post as the time ran out.

The radio only does "AM" in that band, which was the only option during the time the radio was built/designed
See Page 3 and 66

See Page 45 - does not include the UHF Mill Air Band
APCO Project 25 Phase 1 Systems — Digital systems that support the APCO Project 25 protocol developed by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO), the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) and Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA). Systems can operate in conventional, trunked (9600), trunked (3600) and mixed-modes (analog and digital) in any frequency band including UHF, VHF, 800 MHz, and 900 MHz. See “Programming Motorola Systems.

On page 3 it states:

The table below lists the frequency ranges, the default mode
(AM, FM, or Wideband FM), and the default frequency step
for each range.

That's just the default set mode. You can set it to whatever modulation you want that the scanner allows. In this case AM, FM or WFM. Even the step.

Page 66 is again reflecting the default modulation (mode). Still user changeable.

From the RR Wiki: BC296D - The RadioReference Wiki

NOTE: The BC296D will NOT accept P25 custom bandplan offset values. It will only use what it gets from the control channel, and this is not always sufficient for the scanner to trunktrack correctly, especially in the VHF and UHF bands.

There are however four user selectable band plans for control channel only monitoring. A feature I don't ever recommend for reasons...

I converted my BC296D to lipo because I despise nimh/nicad batteries. I have wanted to do something like it for years but could not find a simple way to do it. instructions are here: BC296D: - Uniden BC296D LIPO/lithium ion battery mod

This United States Air Force (3D6) Trunking System, Various, Multi-State says that luke is using project 25 phase I. how can you tell if it is phase II?

Mode defines the type of transmission broadcast on this talkgroup. Analog transmissions are standard voice, Digital and TDMA transmissions are digitally modulated.
A = Analog Talkgroup
D = Digital Talkgroup
M = Mixed Analog/Digital
T = TDMA Capable Talkgroup
--
A trailing lowercase e represents partial encryption. A trailing uppercase E represents full encryption.

So to say this another way, mode D is phase I and mode T is phase II.

I cleared my scanner the other day and spent the last couple of days reprogramming it. just for kicks I added Luke back in to the scanner this morning. chose motorola type2/apco 25 UHF. initially it would not let me change the base frequency. but now (after writing the bank) it does, and it automatically put the base frequency as 385.0375. being as it is the weekend I won't have much of a chance to find out if it works. the database here indicates it is D mode I so hypothetically it should work. I just don't know what to set:
Activity ID
Call
status bit
end of tone

mode is set to NFM steps 12.5k
threshold adjustment range is set to:
330 2147 4064 can't go lower

Are you sure you cannot use a custom trunking table?
This may help.

You should read the manual in its entirety.

You probably don't need to worry about those options though. i-call is like a private call between radios. Seldom used I believe. At least I never heard an i-call on the P25 phase I system I monitor.
