Sorry if already answered somewhere. I think it is but I can’t find it again… does anyone have a list of the police unit numbers and their roles? For example Victor units, Lima units.

These numbers and designators are different for each agency. Is there one particular agency you are trying to identify.

For Utah? Or for LA? Your username preceeds you. :)

It depends a lot on where and what agencies. Most agencies have multiple radio calls based on the officers' roles.

OK, here goes. Attached is a text file with Utah State Callsigns. Start with those
In Salt Lake County and Utah County, UHP has their own dedicated talk groups.
In other counties, UHP is dispatched on the Sheriff's channel.
UHP use their badge numbers as their callsign. Examples: 244, 356.
You will often also hear 1 Alpha, 2 Alpha, 9 Alpha, & 25 Alpha.
Lower numbers are higher in rank. "TIP Units" = Truck Inspection Program.
Tango Units are Incident Management Units.

Davis County:
I have added most of the Davis unique callsigns. (A member from Davis can update these)
Example: Victor = Centerville.
When Davis Search & Rescue is active, they use One Gee callsigns.
Sometimes a West Valley Cop is commuting thru Davis County.
He sees something reportable, and he contacts Davis dispatch using a 5 India callsign.

In most other counties that I have monitored in Utah, they use the State Callsigns.

UPD now has some callsigns that are plain English: Kearns, Magna.
TAC is SWAT. I don't know if they still have 100s, 200s, 300s, etc.
Those were detectives, juvenile, and others.
Car One is THE SHERIFF. Car 20 is the lieutenant, Watch Commander.

South Salt Lake used to use "Lake" callsigns.

The RR wiki has some good information

This following information is dated. Thanks to Jon KF7YN

Well.. here's a start. I haven't had a contact within UPD for a few years so some of this is probably outdated
but here's what I can think of off the top of my head:

Charlie units are West Side on Oquirrh TG.
Juliet = Jail/Transportation usually on Req 1 TG.
Sierra = Court Security on Special Services and Matheson Courthouse TGs.
Lima = Crime Scene Investigators.
Tac = SWAT/Special Ops

Taylorsville PD:
Motor: Motorcycle
Tango = Traffic
Delta = Detectives

Shift supervisor.callsigns use a number preceeding the area identifier such as
2 Midvale or 2 Charlie. Obviously, the lower the number, the higher the rank.

If memory serves (not so much lately) numbered units go something like this.
1-99 Admin, Supervisors, Shift Sgt, etc.
100-299 = Investigators, Detectives, etc.
300-399 = Court Security
4xx = Animal Control
6xx = Canyon Units.
9xx = Search & Rescue

In the past, Alpha units were East Side, Bravo were South (Riverton, Bluffdale, etc.) Charlie units have always been West Side. I don't remember if the SO ever used Delta callsigns for Detectives. That all changed with the creation of cities within former unincorporated areas of the County (Holladay City, Cottonwood Heights, etc.) and with Taylorsville using UPD Dispatch.

Anyone with updated info please feel free to add or correct.
Jon - KF7YN

That is a good list. I believe the Charlie units now patrol mostly in the Kearns/Magna area.
The southwest units have Riverton and Herriman as part of their identifier.
Sometimes they will shift around to cover calls.

You don't hear many Alpha units on the east side anymore besides the watch commanders (or whatever they call themselves).
I think all of the units have a city name in front of their number, i.e. Holladay, Millcreek, Midvale, White City.
Makes for sort of a mouthful when communication is critical. I preferred the A, B, C designations.

I just got on that Wiki page to make some corrections to the federal agencies. Someone listed the "GSA (Geological Survey Agency)" when it is the "USGS (United States Geological Survey)." The federal government's "GSA" is the "General Services Administration." I also spelled out what the BLM, ATF and a couple more really are named. You can't assume everyone knows what the BLM is. Especially since those letters might be better known as "Black Lives Matter." I hope I contributed to the page being more useful. As a federal government retiree I'm very familiar with many of the federal agencies that were listed.
