I hear it occasionally. Usually at weird hours. Never in the clear though.
Well I mean its bloody interesting...The thread that won’t die.
Well, with all due respect and deference, KevinC, Good Mysteries rarely die, and any Mystery that is an ongoing event, as this one is, evidenced by N4GEX and the Duderino's reports, I think qualifies as a Good one.The thread that won’t die.
Not sure where exactly you are located but from about 2030-2130 in Greensboro 451.800 was just about non-stop and full-scale. All secure, and 3 radio ID's.. 9002131, 9003034, and 9041031. Then it abruptly stopped. Didn't coincide with anything going on locally.Brief blip of activity caught again this evening around 9:30. 451.800 p25 still secured with RIDs in the 900XXX range. Also some hits on VHF on 158.400 also p25 encrypted with similar IDs. Not sure if related, but at the same time a couple military Beechjets-400 ( T-1A) Jayhawks were doing touch n goes at Greensboro with one mentioning on GSO Approach 124.350 that he a few more approaches then would be going to Myrtle Beach. Coincidence, who knows?

It always used to be NAC 167 and was strong in this area. I have recently seen NAC 1 and a couple of times NAC A87, but it is very weak like another site is transmitting or the site was moved. Still always encrypted, whoever it is has excellent encryption discipline as i've only heard it in the clear one time a few years ago with an aircraft.
I can only surmise (assumes first cousin) that in certain air op scenarios, anything goes. Wasn't it Flying Alaska (or similar) where they would have Maritime VHF 88 onboard the aircraft? Of course that's Alaska and things are way different (right or wrong is debatable).Oh, so you think the tx's were from a fixed location/base station/tower and not mobile to mobile then? Forgive me if this has been mentioned and I have just forgotten.
Interesting about the aircraft being in the clear. Some of the more disciplined agencies with regard to encryption I have noted in the clear when doing air to ground operations as well. Do you remember much in the way of details with regard to what you surmise the air operations were up to, like an educated guess?
Not that it is likely even relevant, but are biz band freqs even allocated for air ops?
As of lately, I haven’t given this much thought. Lack of time and extra life happenings, but today I decided to check the forums and take a listen while making a run to Greensboro. Sure enough 451.800 was heard briefly this afternoon in Greensboro, but with a new, to me, NAC of 001. Also in the same timeframe a brief blip on 158.400, NAC 167. All this seemed to be occurring while I was in the area of W Friendly & Pembroke between Chic Fil A and Wesley Long Hospital.451.800 remains dead but the 469.550 $167 was active again yesterday in Greensboro according to the recordings on my 536. All enc with only 9003101 heard.
