Updating firmware on a BC796D

I'm pulling my hair out! I reviewed posts on the forum and I can't update this scanner. I'm the second owner of the scanner. The current version is 3.29. Is there an updated version?
I've tried registering the scanner on the Uniden site but forget how I get an ESN and checksum and there's none showing on the All my scanners list.
I updated My Pro-106 with no problem (after receiving help on here about a year ago) and just finished updating the firmware on my 996t last week.
Can anyone help me? I know there are a lot of other posts on here about the very same thing but honestly I can not make sense of them....

No ESN/Checksum is mentioned on the Uniden TWiki for the 796 - just be sure to follow the instructions precisely. No shortcuts

Thanks Mike. I've used your link before and all goes well until I have to enter the Registration Key number. I have been using the key for my 996t as I can't seem to get one for the 796 when I registered it. The program then tells me I'm using the number for the 996t.

Mike, as usual I was missing something totally. I was picking the wrong update from the wrong file. I went back and tracked down where I downloaded the update and followed the instructions on your link and everything went smooth as butter.
