How long do you leave your scanner on (handhelds) I'm using my pro-96 all the time and tend to use the light on the unit when indoors.

Any real harm in using the scanner (handheld) so much, other then the light possibly burning out sooner then normal? Unit runs off wall plug when indoors and reg. batteries when mobile.

I do shut the unit off while sleeping unless it's storming or i know storms are coming.....

Thanks

All Clear:

I've been scanning for about 10 years or so. I still have an OLD radio shack pro-28 with a whopping 30 channel memory! lol...anyway, before I "retired" that scanner it has been through EXTREMELY harsh conditions. It would stay turned on until I went to sleep (most of the time stayed on even when I was sleeping), sit in my car in the heat & cold, dropped about 1000 times, stepped on etc. I have never had a problem with it. Most of my scanners stay on all the time, plugged into the wall and blaring away all day long. So far, 10 years later....no problems.

By the way....you SHOULD listen when there is a storm (maybe just on battery power and not plugged into the wall), I usually hear tons of action when a storm hits....especially a lightening storm.

As far as the light on the unit...I've never had any blow out or not work anymore.

Good Luck & KEEP SCANNING !!!

My 96 has been running 24/7 for about 2 years now. Either plugged in or on rechargable batts., light on all night. Never had one problem with it. Also have a Uniden 785 thats in the car...operated at temps from -5 to 105, never had problems with that either. Scanners may not be built to Mil-Spec like actual radios are, but they are still highly durable electronic devices.

PRO96 LED's

I work on LED overhead signage (among many other display equipment) and can assure you that LED's have many thousands of hours of operation- they merely dim slowly over time.
Some of the signage I have worked on has been in use 24/7 since 1995- and apart from the power supplies failing or controller logic reprogramming, the actual LED panels are still going strong. Only when a new sign is installed near an original do you notice the dimming of the older LED's.

I also have a PRO96 and the backlighting is on all the time- as it is used indoors.
My Uniden UCB9000XLT is still as good as the day it was bought in 1995!!

I can not wait until household globes go LED!

BTW- I have upgraded my AA MAGLITES to LED with a locally avaliable kit- much better than the globes. Also going to do the tail lamps in the car!

Pro-96 about 8 hours a day, lately.

I let the 1800mAH batts run down then put it in TS charger for about 20 hours...

Usually 1/4 wave ground plane, see Avatar, for APCO-25/ or 3/4 wave ground plane for Apco-25 at shop/ or 800 Mhz RS for mobile APCO-25/ or Stock for VHS Air for antennas.

As you can see this is mostly an APCO-25 dedicated scanner as that's were the action is here in Austin TX... (Almost everything is Digital in Austin Tx...)

Run the Pro-91 with center loaded RS for Weather amd Amatuer Radio Weather Watchers Net and Amatuer in general... Does a good job even if it's a Uniden-in-RS-clothing. Not a bad little scanner for analog. Got some amazing stuff with it before Apco-25 was implemented here...
Run Pro-91 a few hours per week, unless I'm in San Antonio, then it's at least 8 hours if not 24-7 for MIl/Air and wireless-phone,(no-I-won't-tell-tales...)
Here again I run it til batteriers give out and then continue on charger.
