• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Looking for an ICOM VHF p25 mobile rig for 2 meter use and to listen to a P25 utility in my area. It's a state wide trunked system, but has little traffic, except after a major weather event. At home, I listen to it on a Home Patrol-1 and a BCD996T scanner. It also works fine on an R2500 if I put in the local control channels. I don't want to get involved with a trunking land mobile rig because of issues with the radio trying to affiliate with the trunking system. And I don't have a system key.

The rig should be able to do wide & narrow and have 2.5 & 5 Khz steps. A detachable control head would be nice, too. Is there anything on the used market that fits the bill??

I'm (unfortunately) in NY, so a scanner in the car isn't an option. I just want a rig that does 2 Meter FM and VHF P25 Rx.

Any Ideas?

Tnx & 73,

A F1721D has P25 conventional and remote mount kit available. It would have to also have older firmware in it in order to be able to do both wide/narrow. All newer firmware (and new radios) locks the radio to narrow only. I am not 100% certain but I believe analog 3.0 was the last firmware before narrowband lock.

Have you even looked at the www.icomamerica.com website?

Yes, that was the first place I looked. There's talk that the current crop of land mobile radios is narrowband ONLY. Not good for ham / repeater use. Besides, I'm looking for used, as I don't want to pay $1000++ for a single band mobile rig.

The website is a place to start. Now you see the options for what you are looking for, start hunting for them in the used market place. Likely there is an option to allow wideband programming, as lots of VHF is still +/-5KHz wideband. Is there a reason you won't look at other manufacturers? Vertex and Kenwood both offer VHF P25 mobiles, that can be remote mounted... In terms of quality IMHO Kenwood is light years ahead of Icom and Vertex.
