I have the BC246T and use either radioreference or the Southwest Frequency Directory to get my frequencies. My question is : If trying to program a trunked group that requires a fleetmap such as those found in the manual on pp.106-107- from either of the above sources of frequencies is there a way of telling which fleetmap to use or is it just a guessing game?

For the most part radioreference lists the fleet map if it's known. Here's an example,
http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=166

Type I systems are being replaced by Type II or TypeIIi systems. Type IIi systems allow mixed Type I and Type II TGs. Type I systems were the original Motorola trunking technology and most of them are pretty old. They are being replaced by Type II systems as the old hardware reaches end of life. I'm not even sure that Motorola still makes any Type I equipment.

Thanks- and what is meant by hex and DEC?

DEC is Decimal. Hex is Hexidecimal. For our purposes Hex is how Motorola numbers talk groups and DEC is how Uniden and GRE/Radio Shack scanners number them. For programming purpose ignore HEX.

Much appreciated. I guess my original question should have been how do I tell from a frequency book which fleetmap to use. I guess the preset maps 1-16 and the block and size code are just a tad confusing to me.

Is there a way to search for a fleetmap? I've got a 396t and had to search long and hard for a fleetmap. Is it possible for them to make a search function that would search for the proper fleetmap? Just a thought....

I doubt it since the information isn't transmitted over the air but is programmed into the radio. Besides, with most Type I systems going away it's not worth investing any effort in technology to track them.

Just curious, what system did you have difficulty for finding a fleetmap?

Raytown, Missouri. After searching this site, and other KC area sites, I found it at mokanscan.com

Once you verify that the system is indeed a TypeIIi and the fleetmap you got is correct, we sure would appreciate an update to the DB.

Well, looking at the website I got it from, it says it IS a typeIIi Smartnet (hybrid).
How would I go about verifying? I programmed the fleetmap and it receives just fine right the moment. Here's the fleetmap-
Block0 Size0
Block1 Size0
Block2 Size3
Block3 Size7
Block4 Size3
Block5 Size0
Block6 Size0
Block7 Size0
I've never entered anything to the database before so you'll have to help me out on that one, k. On that same note, how do I go about doing so. I have some railroad freqs. and others that I don't see in the db for my area. Just to help out others.

Would a wrong fleetmap keep you from receiving the system????

It will keep you from hearing some Talk Groups, but not the entire system.

This is not quite correct, it would not stop you from hearing anything; it would not properly associate the sub-fleets, but you would still hear everything. Indeed if you set up a TypeI system as a TypeII system, you miss nothing but you get some strange looking TG ID's.

On this subject, once you are sure the fleetmap you have (that you got from the web site) is correct (and BTW I had looked at it before my prior post) by ensuring that the fleet/sub-fleet ID's are coming in correctly, then the way you listed them above would work just fine. Any submissions for the DB should be done from the page of the system/county/agency that you are trying to update, there are instructions for what to do when you click the "Submit" tab. Just for general information, new systems/agencies are submitted in a similar fashion using the "submit" link on most pages.
