I've found the UT-106 somewhat effective on the static crashes when on HF but it does seem like a tone control would work just as well. I think you will find a NR setting of around 4 works best and anything above that results in distortion as you mentioned,
The ANF works good for getting rid of those heterodynes and is worth the install if just for that purpose only.
One other thing is that as soon as you switch on the NR even if set at "0" you will see a reduction in audio response on the high end so keep that in mind. I normally leave the NR off unless needed to get the best frequency response.

I've got a pcr-2500 and I bought and installed the ut-106 module. When I increase the Noise reduction I get a "babbling brook" sound and the ssb gets distorted. I am not too disappointed as the NR does work just wondering if this is a normal reaction. Thanks in advance lots of good info here !! Rick
