• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Thanks Hazarat!
I just received this G4 and it's a G4N. Seems to be working ok. Here and there I'll get a small bit of initial garbage on decryption but then goes intelligible. The only other thing is that it takes it up to about 2 or 3 seconds to re-acquire the control channel when changing talk groups. Is there a CC Scan timing that can be increased?

The delay you mention is when you select a different knob position, correct? If so, that is completely normal. How many sites do you have programmed in? If you have multiple sites, it will take some time for it to pick the strongest one. If it is only a single site, it will lock on pretty quick.

I'll jump in here with a question..I have a G4 with 1.33 firmware (for mixed systems with 700/800 and VHF control channels) all works fine. Any benefits to upgrade firmware?
People always seem to have a desire to upgrade to the latest and greatest firmware. But as we've seen with Unication, the latest is not always the greatest. So, the old adage holds true: "don't fix it if it ain't broke". My G5 is actually on V1.34 and PPS V3.16 since it was issued, and given how I use and program my pager, I've had no trouble. I have no desire to either up or downgrade.

I rearranged the Control Channels and put our closest site frequencies first on the list. It's quite a bit faster now to lock on!

Can I roll back to an earlier firmware and how do we do it?

I'm get a prompt while trying to roll back the firmware:

Is it safe to answer yes? And, is there a way to take a a codeplug from PPS 4.0 and load it into 3.0 in case it loses all the programming?

I clicked yes at that point, and had no problems. The programming does get erased when the process is done. I already had several code plugs saved from the earlier 4.0 software.

Well if I export the profile from 4.0 as an .unipps file and try to import that into 3.0, no-go:

I made quite a lot of changes in 4.0 since I upgraded from 3.0. So it looks like I'd have to lose those changes if I roll back the firmware. I wish PPS would let us select all and make a change once to all TGs / knob positions. And I don't understand why 4.0 tells us to re-enter all our TGs all over again. Why couldn't they make it do that automatically? It's all just dumb data. This is a pain in the ass.

While you can go back in FW/PPS, but you can not use the new profile in old PPS/FW, you must redo it. Guess it is the same reason you can't use the same part on different year models of cars sometimes.

Interesting, this is a great finding. I did not know that it looks for the sites that are first in the list first, although it makes sense.

Unrelated, but has anyone with a G4N/G5N reported issues with 2.02? Or is it just older models that were previously on the 1.x firmware that are reporting issues?
