Hopefully they are better at stocking than the one near me. They have become mostly a cell phone store.

I just bent some sheet metal and hung the radios from the sunroof opening. It's a 2017 Explorer, so there's limited options without intruding on already limited storage space.

For all you traveling with your SDS100, are you just running the stock or aftermarket screw on antenna? Mine does great at home, but in the car, some days I’ll hear stuff clear, other days its kinda garbled and its just quiet, and it shouldn’t be. Especially when i get to one side of the county, it just like a dead zone, which it isn’t, cause ive had not problem with other canners in this area before. When i got to the next county, that has simulcast it always loud and clear, even in the car. But in my county, its like i said, just curious.

Using a whip/duck antenna inside a vehicle is a recipe for bad reception. The vehicle body blocks most of the signal.

I run a comtelco scanner antenna in the car and in the shack.

It makes a huge difference in the car.

I use a window mount BNC clip, Radio Shack 800mhz antenna on it, and short coax with BNC to the scanner. Excellent reception.

When I travel, I use a TRAM 1089-BNC Scanner Mini-Magnet Antenna (VHF/UHF/800mhz). I use an NMO mount 3 dB gain 800 MHz mobile antenna on the daily driver (it performs acceptable on VHF/UHF).

I saw something, that you mount your regular bnc duckie antenna, in my case, 800mhz Remtronix 800mhz, and you mount it on a window clipoutsie, and roll up the window, and then run the cable to your scanner? If the antenna was out side the car, wouldnt that help?

It depends on the type and quality of systems that you are trying to receive. In the DC / Baltimore metro area, extending to the rural Eastern Shore region, there is no need for an external antenna to receive public safety systems within their service footprint. And sometimes, the attenuation effect of a vehicle body can be a good thing when attempting to receive simulcast systems, particularly with my "old" / now sold 436. One caveat is I used a Laird 1/4 wave antenna cut specifically for 850mhz on the 436, and the RS800Mhz on the SDS100.

Of course, this may not apply if you are trying to receive non-simulcast systems across multiple bands. YMMV.

Why?

I currently use a ProClip mount for my BC436hp, but due to the case design for the SDS100, the side grips cannot hold onto the SDS100. Does anyone have a recommendation for mounting the SDS100 in the car, besides a Ram Mount?

Would you be willing to disclose the reason(s) why you don't want to use the Ram mount?

I've tried multiple car mounting options and none of them worked even close to as well as the Ram Mount system does.

I'm going to use the ram mount finger grip with the proclip mount.

Proclip has custom fitted, no holes to drill, mounts. Their main market is cell phones. I have adapted several mounts to scanners and ham radios.
