Here it comes! Remember Slave Lake.

I remember Slave Lake .. I was there. Robertmac .. you are one weird individual. Maybe someday you will actually be able to make a complete sentence, but given your past record, I doubt it.

Flamming someone

I thought this forum was about Voice scrambling/encryption not about flamming someone. Edmscan, is that or this sentence good enough for you? I hope my grammar and sentence structure is sufficient for your standards!

Slave Lake Thread

FIRE FIRE!! Slave Lake AB Evac! see this thread on the Prairies postings. Sorry, not a computer geek so don't know how to post the link to the thread. Other articles are on the internet about communication problems. I guess we will have to listen to Tow Truck operators to get information.

I think my explanation makes more sense.

I guess we can all read it together. With so many RR members up there working on communications you would think we would remember any voice scamble.

Seeing how I WAS one of the RR members that did go to Slave Lake, I can say that none of the comms we listened, while in Slave Lake, to were encrypted. There are atleast 2 other RR members on this board that were VERY involved in Slave Lake. One was there another was on the edmonton support side.

Ok, back to encryption on PPSTN

Just so you will all know. An MA-Com / Harris radio using encryption cannot communicate with a Motorola radio that is using encryption on the PPSTN.
They must use open P25 to communicate.
Why ? Their Keys are not the same, the method and equipment to load these Keys is not the same. These manufacturers will not share code with each other because they each want to sell more radios to PPSTN.

You sure about that? If P25 is a standard and the standard addresses encryption, regardless how one keyloads, the devices will be able to communicate. Now if the actual keys are different, then of course the subscribers units will no be able to communicate. Others on rr.com seem to have no difficulty to get it work.

I think the latter may be more plausible. I can't see the RCMP sharing their keys with anyone. In Alberta they used to change them every month. I liked the end of the month when they were in the clear with some units on the old code and some the new. Probably they can do this over the air now.

Special O had one key and the other voice privacy units had another. Do the RCMP in Saskatchewean use one vendor or do they split it Harris/Motorola? Before the PACS system here RCMP split between GE and Motorola.

RCMP has their equipment and their Keys (Harris)
The OFC has their equipment and their Keys (Motorola)
They do not share. Ever.
The open P25 TGs are to be used for interoperation. No 10 codes are to be used.

From your original post, I interpreted it a saying the agencies couldn't communicate encrypted because the subscriber's equipment were from different vendors, which is not the case. They may not be able to communicate encrypted because of different keys, but this is not an infrastructure issue. If the provincial government decreed encryption on mutual aid talkgroups and supplied a standard key, the agencies would be able to communicate between each other. Now, if they did that, I would think it would be poor system planning, but from an infrastructure point of view it would work.

Cheers

Has anyone heard of the RCMP Battleford going with some kind of voice scrambling on the P25 network ?.
Yes. I am seeing more use of encryption on the RCMP's regular TGs every day now. Looks like the end of the year it will be over for open P25.
EMS/Fire and others were never even offered the encryption option by OFC. So we will still have much to listen to.
