Recently moved and today unboxed an old scanner that just happened to have 151.16 plugged in and while letting it scan around for a bit to see what I get at the new place I heard some noise come over and noticed it sounded like a control channel. So I checked the DB and was FLOORED to see that it came back to Wapp PD on a DMR system.

I could never tell if they used a poor signal system or some type of analog scrambling (is that a thing? ;).)
I could be right down the street from the station (Literally across the street at mesier park) and get the same sound so it leads me to believe if I am right next to the station hearing that, I couldn't imagine how bad it would be for units in the field if it is indeed low signal or another issue.

If you have ever heard the noise you know exactly what I am talking about its a few short bursts of a buzzing noise (EEERT EEER EEEERT) almost like APRS but certainly not. I know this is not on my end because I have heard it on 5+ different radios in different locations with different antennas as well as talked to a local about it with them confirming the same sounds. Another person a long time ago told me they just have really bad radios but It's the same sound every time, never once in all the years I have been scanning have I ever heard a voice come over, even while right across the station and really just anywhere in the village.

For years I have always wondered why but never figured to ask on here but this has redrawn my curiosity on it even though it looks like that system is now either degraded or done being used. I'm sure someone with much more knowledge than I will chime in, and I hope so!

It’s digital. That’s what you are hearing.

The new system yes, DMR. But I hope I phrased it right, I meant I was curious about the old system issues/noises, all of the above mentioned is referencing the old 452.9500 one.

Yes same thing it’s the digital emissions you are describing.

They just moved back to VHF this past Friday, the 25th.

Prior to that they were on 463.4875 DMR, and the 452.950 Frequency was analog but only used for events like the annual St Patrick's day parade. They would lease additional analog radios to be used by officers on overtime, and their Law Enforcement Partners that were detailed to the parade.

It makes sense for the switch back to VHF as the DCSO and NYSP who usually provide them assistance are on VHF.

Good stuff, I honestly had no idea they were on DMR and that 452 wasn't main. I gotta get an SDR already. Wish I had known that a month ago to listen to it for the first and last time lol, ! oh well. But what would be the cause for that EEREER EER sound on 452 I would hear every once in a while?
I noticed it's completely gone now since the change. It would make sense if it had some type of link to the DMR and is a digital sound or something like ff026 mentioned, I am just super curious to know what I have always been hearing. Unless it's a placebo effect I totally feel like it would always pick up the noise activity after they were dispatched from 911 polling.

Without hearing it myself it would be hard to say what you where hearing, could of been anything honestly.
