After being out of the hobby for 20 years, getting back into scanning and realizing that my RS Pro-90 isn’t as useful as it once was.

I’m looking at a used SDS100, and from what I can tell, the Warren County Sheriff and my local OSP has not moved to Encrypted talk groups. Before I pull the trigger on the scanner, I just wanted to confirm that my googling is correct.. and that the scanner isn’t a dumb buy for my area.

The SDS100 should work quite well for you. Keep the Pro-90 for scanning conventional stuff; the SDS100 has something less than ideal sensitivity on VHF and UHF.

Many of the local counties have been rumored to go encrypted whether warren county does or not is yet to be seen. This city of cincinnati and hamilton county have strong rumors of encryption.Others may know more about warren county.

I work in Warren County doing public safety and live in Greene County. So far the only agencies that I have heard are going fully encrypted are the City of Cincinnati police and fire department. The SDS 100 is a great scanner for Warren County. I own 2 SDS 100's and 2 SDS 200's. I have an excellent program already written for Warren County and all of its neighboring counties. The neighboring counties can be turned off and on really easily when needed. If you want me to program it or assist you in learning how to use the radio, I would be happy too. My only fee for programing and teaching is a cup of coffee or a glass of ice tea.

I appreciate the offer, but I’m looking forward to learning the scanner and figuring out how to do it on my own. I’ve been watching YT vids in advance so I can hopefully hit the ground running.

Looking at the Warren Co Simulcast, I think that "Police Primary 2 (South)" is for Mason PD. Are you able to confirm that?

Yes 83 PD PRIM 2 should have the south departments.

I have not asked in a a bit but I know sometimes 83 PD PRIM 1 and 83 PD PRIM 2 are either patched or they just use 83 PD PRIM 1 at night when activity is low.

83 Law Primary South is what the city of Mason PD, Hamilton Twp PD and the Warren County Sheriffs department Deerfield Twp contract deputies operate on. All of the rest of the law enforcement agencies that are dispatched by the county com center operate on 83 Law Primary North. Those units are the Warren County Deputies, City of Carlisle PD, City of Springboro PD, Clearcreek Twp PD, Waynesville PD , and Harveysburg PD. I believe the State Park rangers at Caesars creek state park have access to this talk group as well. I know the park rangers also have there own dispatch channel to talk to the state dispatchers. The City of Lebanon, The City of Franklin have there own dispatch channels. The City of Loveland is on there own dispatch center witch is Northeast Communications system. Info on those talk groups can be found on the Hamilton County page. Atrium Medical Center Police departments Talk group can be found on the Butler County page. If you want to make a Warren County Law enforcement favorites list and you want to include Atrium Police and Loveland police, then you will also have to put in the Hamilton County and Butler County control frequencies. I also almost forgot. The Ohio state highway patrol post in Lebanon dispatches the troopers for both Butler County and Warren County. If you add the Warren County OSP talk group into the radio you will be hearing Post 9 and Post 83 troopers.

Well stated Dan, this is exactly how they are used.
As reminder everyone should always refer to the wiki for the individual counties for
additional information.
