The success of a pilot program for interoperable 800 MHz radio communications in Washington County is now spreading across the state. Radio towers are still going up across the state; the latest effort is expanding coverage in the north, west, and the southeast corners of Rhode Island. But as Homeland Security funds have dwindled, communities are scrambling for grants or trying to budget for their own portable and mobile radios to fit the interoperable system.
