Probably temperature inversion/ducting; sun heats upper atmosphere first. Also two air masses with different temperatures -- warm and cold -- can create ducting along the front. HTH.

I have noticed that signals for some reason do travel further during fog. I have noticed my receptions greatly increases and my transmit range is extended also.
