Snapped this pic this morning in Mobile County Alabama it is a amateur radio tag/license plate but can anyone enlighten me what's up with the weird callsign? In Alabama you do have to present you ham license to get a ham tag so odds are it's not a "misprint" or fake.
Aviator.
In NY we have to put our callsign on the Amateur background. Is it possible to personalize them in your state?
I'm guessing that the guy is a pilot and somebody at the DMV f'ed up. Or maybe their computer system isn't configured properly.
In states like Ohio, they don't need to be. You present your certificate and that call sign goes on the plate.Someone wanted "Aviator". The people at the DMV aren't expected to be experts in FCC callsign allocations.
AYV8R is not a valid US ham callsign, so it is either a misprint (intentional or not) or a fake. It can't be real.
At first I thought it might be someone with the call AV8R, but the license plate was already taken by someone else that was not a ham. However, AV is not a valid US prefix, so that can't be.
No idea what is going on with that plate, but I just don't see how it can be a valid US ham call.
