Windsor bringing in a foam trailer with a few hundred gallons of foam. Advising that oil on top of the water is catching on fire and holding off on water until they get foam.

Firefighters are battling a blaze that started with explosions east of Gilcrest this afternoon.

The fire, south of Weld County Road appears to have occurred about 12:30 p.m. at a plant where oil refining water is recycled.

Jim Goddard, the general manager of Conquest Disposable Service LLC, said the facility at 19094 Weld 40 accepts Class 2 oil field waste and brine water to be recycled.

Goddard said today was a typical day at the plant and that the cause of the explosion was unknown. It also was unclear what was burning.

Three people were injured and transported to hospitals by ambulance, he added. The extent of their injuries was unknown.

Goddard has been in charge of this plant for five years and he’s never seen an incident like this in that time.

Elaine Oster lives about a half-mile from the explosion site.

She originally saw the thick, black smoke as she was driving in La Salle. Because the smoke was so black, she said she had a good feeling it was an oil fire.

She said the biggest challenge the firefighters may be facing is getting enough water to battle the blaze in this remote area.

In the first hour after she returned home, she saw about six to seven water tanker trucks from various fire departments in the area.

At least five area fire departments responded to the scene including crews from La Salle, Platteville, Fort Lupton, Milliken and Kersey. A&W Water Co. also supplied two trucks of water.

From Oster's vantage point, she could see flames coming from two to three different areas of the property initially.

At 1:30 p.m., she said the black smoke had started to change to white and was starting to thin out, but from her property, she could still see some flames.

“They are getting it knocked down really fast,” she said.
