I listen to ATC quite often and the US is going towards CPDLC. What frequency is CPDLC on, and does it sound like ACARS on 131.55Mhz.

In Canada CPDLC, in addition to using VDL2, is also transmitted on the original ACARS frequencies (POA - Plain Old ACARS).

Oh no it isn't. Legacy ACARS does not provide the required maximum message end to end response time per the ICAO standard. In addition, legacy ACARS does not allow the extended instruction set required for CPDLC operations.

Common to see aircraft that are not VDL2 equipped but CPDLC equipped. This was on 131.550. This from YOW, you're not seeing this in YYZ ?

I haven't monitored conventional ACARS or VDL2 for quite a while now, no. In digging in deeper last night I did however find that FANS mode 1/A using POA has been implemented very recently (during 2019) providing CPDLC communications after message delivery and latency testing done between the FAA, Boeing, airline operators and the network and equipment providers. When I left the ATC environment in late 2015 this hadn't begun. It is not exclusive to Canada.

Speaking of CPDLC in the USA, I see that in addition to Kansas City and Indianapolis, Washington Center has recently started using it for enroute operations. AFIK these are the only 3 Centers using it right now for enroute comms. Anyone here able to get uplinks and decode it in these areas ? I'd be interested in seeing some logs (PM me). I'm curious to what extent the US domestic fleet is equipped and using it these days.

From the limited time I have monitored VDL2 in these areas it appeared they were using 136.650 more often for enroute CPDLC ops, vs 136.975. Any reports appreciated.

Probably wrong but I was always under the impression that cpdlc data was going though the ads system.

I corrected my post a couple of messages later to confirm what AirScan had posted. POA is indeed carrying FANS 1/A traffic, which is CPDLC content.
Oops I missed that post. Am I correct to assume that VDL2 is the primary mode and ACARS is reversionary mode for most operators?
